Syracuse basketball's involvement in the 2026 Players Era is currently uncertain, as the event's format may be undergoing changes. Originally, the Players Era planned for a 32-team field, but reports suggest it might be trimmed to 24 teams. This shift could affect several programs, including Syracuse, which had been highlighted in a Players Era social media post back in February.
In that February update, the Players Era announced that the 2026 event would feature returning programs from 2025, including Syracuse. Recently, Syracuse Athletics introduced Gerry McNamara as the new head coach, succeeding Adrian Autry.
The Players Era, a prominent tournament held in Las Vegas during Thanksgiving, started in 2024 with eight teams and expanded to 18 by 2025, with Syracuse participating. Unfortunately, Syracuse faced challenges last November, going winless against Houston, Kansas, and Iowa State.
While attempts to reach a Syracuse spokesperson for comment have been unsuccessful, it's noteworthy that the Players Era is heavily influenced by NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) deals, with 2025 participants reportedly earning at least $1 million.
Ian Orefice, CEO of EverWonder Studio, which co-produces the event, mentioned that the official announcement of the 2026 lineup is forthcoming. He refuted claims in the report, emphasizing that details about the event's format and team selections are not disclosed until officially announced.
Syracuse's basketball program, under Coach McNamara, is planning a substantial roster budget for 2026-27, estimated between $9 million and $10 million. Missing out on the Players Era's financial benefits could be a setback for the Orange, as they look to secure their place in this evolving tournament landscape.
