Syracuse Basketball Faces Major Challenge as Eric Devendorf Sounds Alarm

Syracuse's basketball future may hinge on retaining rising star Kiyan Anthony, as former player Eric Devendorf emphasizes his critical role on and off the court.

In a recent episode of the 'Orange Zone' podcast, former Syracuse University guard Eric Devendorf weighed in on the potential impact of losing freshman Kiyan Anthony from the SU men's basketball program. Anthony, who has been a key player this season, averages 8.7 points per game, along with 1.5 rebounds and one assist. His shooting accuracy stands at 41.8 percent, having participated in 26 of the team's 27 games.

With the Orange holding a 15-12 overall record and a 6-8 mark in the ACC, Anthony's development is crucial. While he needs to build strength to enhance his rebounding and defensive presence, his offensive skill set is undeniable. As his long-range shooting becomes more consistent, his potential will only grow.

Devendorf highlighted Anthony's influence beyond his on-court performance, noting his ability to draw other talented players to Syracuse. "Having Kiyan and the connection to Melo [Carmelo Anthony] brings attention to the program," Devendorf emphasized. "Think about the players Kiyan could attract and help recruit."

Carmelo Anthony, a Syracuse legend, remains a significant figure for young recruits, and Kiyan's connection to him is invaluable. Devendorf also suggested that Carmelo should take on a larger role within the program, leveraging his influence further.

While there's no indication that Kiyan plans to transfer, the ever-changing landscape of college sports leaves the door open. The uncertainty surrounding head coach Adrian Autry's future adds another layer of intrigue. Although unlikely, the possibility of Kiyan declaring for the NBA Draft can't be dismissed entirely.

Syracuse is set to face the University of North Carolina at home this Saturday, with tip-off at 1 p.m. ET. North Carolina is coming off a tough loss to North Carolina State, 82-58, and is dealing with injury challenges.

In other news on campus, former Syracuse football offensive lineman Justin Outten has been promoted by the Seattle Seahawks. Previously serving as a run-game specialist and assistant offensive line coach, Outten is now the run game coordinator under head coach Mike Macdonald.

Despite not securing the offensive coordinator position, Seattle's continued investment in him speaks volumes about his value to the team. Outten's ties to Syracuse run deep, having played on the offensive line from 2003 to 2006 and coached there in 2007.
