Syracuse entered the fall with a familiar kind of hope, the kind that shows up every year when fans want to believe this is finally the season things turn. New athletic director Bryan Blair clearly wanted to push that feeling forward, too, with his staff working to improve the gameday atmosphere, reach students and create a better experience around the program.
The effort was there. The response was not nearly enough.
Syracuse offered a 63% discount on tickets for the Cal game, but the announced attendance still landed at 36,031. That number doesn’t pin the blame on Blair or on the fanbase so much as it lays bare where the program stands right now. For a team trying to sell belief, the first crack in the armor came fast.
The Orange are 1-1, and the timing couldn’t be less forgiving. A short week leads straight into Thursday night at Pittsburgh, and with that comes an even steeper climb to keep momentum alive. The positive energy around the program has already taken a hit, and after yesterday, the task of winning people over only got harder.
That skepticism didn’t come out of nowhere. Syracuse closed 2025 with a 9-game losing streak, and that kind of ending sticks with people.
It’s why some fans are quick to jump at the first stumble now. It’s also why the question hangs over every game: is this season going to feel more like 2024, when a bad home loss to Stanford didn’t send everything off the rails, or more like 2025, when the losses kept getting uglier?
No one is seriously saying Syracuse should drop football to FCS, and no one should be drawing a straight line to the Greg Robinson Era. But the pressure around this program is real, and it lands on Blair, Fran Brown and Steve Angeli all the same.
The short week should tell us a lot. Can Angeli bounce back?
Can the defense keep holding up? Can Syracuse clean up the penalties that keep dragging things down?
At 1-1, the margin for error has already shrunk, and it’s on Brown to get the Orange moving in the right direction again.
Early-season results always invite some overreaction, but Syracuse can’t afford to shrug off chances like this. The Orange out-played Cal.
They had control of the game and still let it slip away. If the goal is to convince fans that this year is different, repeating the same mistakes is the fastest way to lose them again.
That makes the road to bowl eligibility harder, and it makes the fight to win back the fanbase harder too. Now the only thing left is to see how Syracuse handles the response.

Justus Ross-Simmons ended up in uniform for Syracuse against Cal after a wild, last-minute legal turn restored his eligibility just hours before kickoff. He had initially been ruled ineligible because of his removal from a lawsuit in Texas, but an Onondaga County judge granted a temporary restraining order that allowed him to suit up, and he responded with six catches for 105 yards in his first collegiate game in 322 days.
The larger concern for Syracuse is that the matter is far from settled. Ross-Simmons remains under review, with a hearing scheduled for September 30, which means the Orange are still waiting for a longer-term answer on a player who could matter a lot to the offense if he stays available. Ben Lees trip to AZ Compass Preps Pro Day gave Syracuse another look at one of the countrys deeper prep powers, and the Orange appear to be keeping close tabs on a program that keeps producing college-ready talent. The Chandler, Arizona school has become a national destination, and Syracuses coaching staff is said to be evaluating multiple players there as it continues to build its board out West.
Among the names drawing attention is 2028 four-star guard Darren Ford, a prospect whose long-term upside fits the kind of recruiting work the Orange have been doing on the trail. No official scholarship offers have been confirmed yet, but the interest is notable, especially with AZ Compass Prep viewed as a strong contender for the upcoming high school national championship.
