Mikey Lewis Enters Portal After Breakout Season

Talented Saint Mary's guard Mikey Lewis, once a Syracuse recruit, eyes new opportunities as he enters the transfer portal amidst coaching changes.

Saint Mary's standout sophomore Mikey Lewis, a dynamic guard who once caught the eye of Syracuse's recruiting team, is making waves by entering the transfer portal. This news, shared by national analyst Sam Kayser, has certainly stirred the college basketball scene.

Lewis, standing at 6-foot-3 and weighing in at 185 pounds, hails from Oakland, California. He had an impressive 2025-26 season with the Gaels, helping them to a 27-6 record and a share of the West Coast Conference regular-season title. Despite their strong season, Saint Mary's, seeded No. 7 in the South Region, faced an early exit in the NCAA Tournament against No. 10 seed Texas A&M.

In a tweet from March 25, Lewis confirmed his entry into the transfer portal, highlighting his status as a former four-star recruit who made significant contributions over his two seasons at Saint Mary's. This past season, he averaged 13.9 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game, showcasing his skills with a shooting accuracy of 39.8% from the field, 36.8% from three-point range, and an impressive 88.2% from the free-throw line.

Lewis's accolades include being named to the All-WCC first team this season. As a freshman, he earned the WCC Sixth Man of the Year and a spot on the conference's All-Freshman team. According to 247Sports, he's rated as a four-star transfer, ranked 13th nationally and the top combo guard available.

Interestingly, Syracuse basketball had shown interest in Lewis during his high school days. The Orange extended a scholarship offer in April 2023, and while there was mutual interest, a visit never came to fruition. Lewis was a top-100 prospect in the 2024 class, spending his senior year at the prestigious Prolific Prep in Napa, California, where he helped lead the team to the Chipotle Nationals.

With the recent coaching change at Saint Mary's-Randy Bennett moving to Arizona State and Mickey McConnell stepping up as head coach-the transfer portal window is set to open soon. Whether Syracuse's new head coach, Gerry McNamara, will renew interest in Lewis remains to be seen. One thing is clear: Lewis's sharpshooting could be a valuable asset for any team looking to bolster their lineup for the 2026-27 season.
