Matthew Bergeron has gone from an unknown camp invite to one of the NFL’s most talked-about young offensive linemen, and the Syracuse alum is drawing serious attention as he helps fuel the Atlanta Falcons’ 2-2 start.
Bergeron’s rise is a sharp one. Born in Canada, he grew up playing gridiron football, not American football, before arriving at a Syracuse camp with a group of Canadian prospects.
He wasn’t on the staff’s radar when he showed up. That changed quickly.
After a few reps, Syracuse offered him a scholarship, and he committed soon after.
From there, Bergeron became a key piece for the Orange. At 6-foot-5 and 315 pounds, he played in 46 games over four seasons and earned two All-ACC selections. The Falcons then took him in the second round of the 2023 draft, and in August he signed a four-year, $96 million extension with the team.
The latest praise came after Atlanta’s 45-24 win over the New Orléans Saints on Monday night. NFL Insider Brian Baldinger reacted on social media with a blunt endorsement of Bergeron’s play:
"Bergeron that's about as good as you can get in the league (NFL)"
Baldinger, a former offensive lineman, played more than 10 seasons in the NFL before moving into broadcasting. His résumé includes work with NFL Network and Fox Sports.
If Bergeron keeps stacking performances like this, an All-Pro nod could be in play for the first time in his career. He’ll have another high-profile stage Sunday night when the Falcons host the Baltimore Ravens on NBC.
Kickoff is set for 8:20 p.m. ET.
Back in Syracuse, the Orange are preparing for a road trip to Charlottesville, Va., where they’ll face the Virginia Cavaliers on Saturday. DraftKings lists Syracuse as a 9 1/2-point underdog.
Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET.
Syracuse enters the game at 2-2 after edging UConn 42-41 on Saturday. The program has gone 13 straight years without producing a first-round NFL draft pick, though current defensive back Chris Peal could potentially end that streak in 2027.

Syracuse Fans Finally Have The Schedule Stretch Worth Debating
Syracuse fans now know when one of the more intriguing nonconference tests on the calendar will arrive. The Oranges meeting with Rutgers at Barclays Center in Brooklyn is set for Saturday, Feb. 6, with an 11 a.m. tip and ESPN carrying the game, giving the matchup a national window and an early start that should make it a focal point of the winter slate.
The timing is part of a broader picture now that Syracuses full 2026-27 basketball schedule is out, including the exhibition and regular-season dates that map the road ahead. For a fan base that always tracks the calendar closely, it adds another layer of anticipation to a schedule stretch that already looks worth debating long before February gets here. [Read more 🡒]
Syracuse Faces An Eligibility Mess That Could Drag Into The Season
The latest twist in college sports eligibility has Syracuse and the rest of the ACC bracing for more uncertainty as the NCAAs 5-in-5 rule keeps winding through the courts. ACC commissioner Jim Phillips said the issue has already produced multiple legal challenges from athletes at league schools, a sign that what used to be a fairly administrative corner of the sport is now one of its most fragile.
Phillips stressed that the NCAA still has to enforce its rules if it wants to avoid turning eligibility into chaos, even as athletes continue to assert their right to litigate. For Syracuse, and for schools across the conference, the concern is less about the headlines than the possibility that roster planning could remain cloudy well into the season if the disputes keep piling up. Syracuse Heads To Virginia With ACC Pressure Suddenly Rising
Syracuse heads to Scott Stadium on Saturday with ACC pressure suddenly rising, and the market has taken notice. The Orange are now 8.5-point underdogs against Virginia, a move that adds another layer of urgency to a game that already carries plenty of weight as both teams try to steady themselves in conference play.
The matchup also brings together some familiar coaching and program threads, with background on the staffs, recent form and key player notes all feeding into the buildup. For Syracuse, the challenge is as much about answering the shifting expectations as it is about handling a Virginia team that will be eager to make the most of home field in Charlottesville.
