Josh Schertz Stuns Fans With Unexpected Career Decision

In a surprising turn, Syracuse basketball's coaching search narrows as Josh Schertz commits to Saint Louis, leaving the program to explore other top candidates.

Saint Louis head coach Josh Schertz, once considered a top contender for the Syracuse basketball head coaching position, has committed his future to the Billikens. According to CBS Sports' Jon Rothstein, Schertz has secured a new long-term deal with Saint Louis, putting an end to speculation about his potential move.

Schertz has been a standout figure in this season's coaching carousel, but his decision to stay with the Atlantic 10 Conference school marks a significant moment for Saint Louis. Under his leadership, the Billikens boasted an impressive 27-4 record in the 2025-26 regular season, sharing the Atlantic 10 Conference title.

Despite facing a tough challenge against No. 9 seed George Washington in the Atlantic 10 Tournament quarterfinals, the Billikens are still expected to make an appearance in the NCAA Tournament come Selection Sunday.

With Schertz out of the picture, Syracuse's search for a new head coach continues. Two names gaining traction are Siena head coach and former Syracuse assistant Gerry McNamara, along with South Florida head coach and New York native Bryan Hodgson.

It's important to note that Syracuse recently announced Toledo AD Bryan Blair as their new athletics director, following the dismissal of former head coach Adrian Autry. The urgency is on for Syracuse to finalize their coaching staff before the transfer portal opens next month.

While McNamara and Hodgson are certainly in the mix, it's too early to declare them as front-runners. The search is still wide open, and other candidates are expected to be interviewed. Schertz's decision to stay put has certainly narrowed the field, but the process at Syracuse remains dynamic and full of possibilities.
