Syracuse basketball keeps stacking its 2026-27 non-conference slate with familiar names, and the newest one is another Empire State program.
The Orange will host Canisius at the JMA Wireless Dome on Wednesday, Dec. 16, according to a report first published by nunesmagician.com. Canisius, based in Buffalo, is a Metro Conference member and will be part of first-year head coach Gerry McNamara’s early scheduling build.
The Golden Griffins finished 10-21 overall in the 2025-26 season and went 5-15 in conference play. Syracuse has handled the series for a long time, holding a 47-24 edge all-time, per SU Athletics. The matchup dates back to the 1944-45 season.
The teams last met in November 2023, when Syracuse beat Canisius 89-77 on the Hill early in the 2023-24 campaign. Judah Mintz powered the Orange that night with 26 points, including 19 in the second half at the Dome.
Canisius is the latest piece in a non-conference schedule that is starting to take shape around a mix of local opponents, neutral-site showcases and a road test in the ACC/SEC Challenge.
Syracuse’s non-conference games announced so far are:
• Syracuse against New Haven at the Dome on Monday, Nov. 2
• Syracuse against Central Connecticut State at the Dome on Thursday, Nov. 5
• Syracuse against Indiana at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis on Monday, Nov. 9
• Syracuse against Lafayette at the Dome on Saturday, Nov. 21
• Syracuse at Oklahoma on Tuesday, Dec. 1, as part of the annual ACC/SEC Challenge
• Syracuse against Colgate at the Dome on Tuesday, Dec. 8
• Syracuse against Canisius at the Dome on Wednesday, Dec. 16
• Syracuse against Providence at TD Garden in Boston on Saturday, Dec. 19
• Syracuse against St. John’s at Madison Square Garden in New York City, date TBD
• Syracuse against Rutgers at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., date TBD
• Syracuse against Albany at the Dome, date TBD
The Orange are expected to play 14 non-conference games in 2026-27, along with 18 Atlantic Coast Conference games. There have also been reports that Syracuse is likely to host Cornell, another Central New York opponent. If that comes together, the Orange would have 12 of their 14 non-conference games set, leaving two still to be filled.
McNamara and his staff have already lined up five games against power conference opponents, with four of those coming at neutral sites and one being a true road game at Oklahoma.
