Gerry McNamara has taken on one more Orange address.
After being handed the Syracuse men’s basketball job and the Melo Center, McNamara and his family are now moving into the former home of outgoing athletic director John Wildhack. In a real estate market described as moving fast and above listing, the connection makes the move feel less surprising than it might have otherwise.
The timing has naturally invited some speculation about how the deal came together. Maybe it was part of the March contract talks.
Maybe McNamara wanted the job badly enough that the house became part of the package. Or maybe Wildhack, looking for one last basketball win on his way out, worked the home into the arrangement to help bring an Orange legend back.
There’s also the simpler explanation: McNamara just wanted to skip the open-house grind. It’s easy to picture him preferring the gym or the golf course over spending weekends touring homes. Maybe he first tried to buy back his old place and this was the next best option.
Another possibility is that he’d had his eye on this house for a while. The image writes itself: McNamara at the annual cookout, checking faucets in all seven bathrooms and asking, “Hey John, what’s it cost to heat this thing in the winter?”, or casually tossing out comments about downsizing once the kids are out of college.
Some of those questions might get answered when media availability opens up this fall. For now, the details are left to speculation.
What is clear is that McNamara is back in an old home and a new one. And Syracuse avoided the awkwardness of him buying Adrian Autry’s house, even if that would have made for some memorable content.
