Gerry McNamara is stepping back into the spotlight at Syracuse, this time as head coach of the basketball program he once helped define. Officially announced on Tuesday, McNamara takes the reins from Adrian Autry, who led the team to a 49-48 record over three seasons but couldn't secure an NCAA Tournament berth since 2021.
McNamara, affectionately known as GMac, is no stranger to Syracuse's passionate fan base. As a player, he was instrumental in guiding the Orange to their first national championship in 2003. Now, after a successful stint at Siena, where he turned the program around with a 37-30 record over two seasons, he's back to lead Syracuse into a promising new chapter.
"I love this place," McNamara shared in a heartfelt statement. "Syracuse has given me everything, and I’m ready to give everything back. College basketball has evolved, and I’m prepared to build something special here that meets the expectations of Orange Nation."
His time at Siena was marked by significant progress. The Saints, who had won just four games before his arrival, improved to 14-18 in his first season and made a notable 23-12 run in his second year. They nearly upset the top-seeded Duke in the 2026 NCAA Tournament, showcasing McNamara’s coaching acumen.
Bryan Blair, the newly appointed athletics director at Syracuse, emphasized the importance of this moment for the program. With college basketball's landscape shifting due to factors like the transfer portal and NIL deals, Blair sees McNamara as the right leader to navigate these challenges. "Gerry’s connection to Syracuse is invaluable, but it’s his vision for the future that truly stands out," Blair noted.
Chancellor-elect J. Michael Haynie echoed these sentiments, praising McNamara’s coaching and recruiting skills, along with his deep commitment to the Syracuse legacy.
With a new chancellor, athletics director, and head coach all in place within a few weeks, Syracuse is gearing up for a fresh start. McNamara now faces the task of assembling his coaching staff and building a competitive roster for the 2026-27 season. The Orange faithful are hopeful that with GMac at the helm, the program is on the cusp of something remarkable.
