Alex Kline is headed back into a power-conference role.
Thamel notes that the former Syracuse basketball general manager will become the new GM at the University of Washington, which competes in the Big Ten. Kline had been serving in that same type of role under former Orange head coach Adrian Autry before he, Autry and the rest of the staff were fired in March.
Kline arrived in the Syracuse program in the summer of 2024 and spent two seasons around the Orange, though the timing gave him just one full season to really shape the roster. By then, the 2025-26 season was the one that mattered most for his footprint on the program.
Before joining Syracuse, Kline worked as a scout for the New York Knicks.
His run in Syracuse came during a difficult stretch for the program. The Orange finished 15-17 in 2025-26 and missed the NCAA Tournament for the fifth straight year, which played a major role in the staff shake-up.
A big part of a general manager’s job is navigating the portal and NIL, and Kline did have some success on that front. Naithan George, Nate Kingz and William Kyle III all had prominent roles for Syracuse last season, and all three started for the Orange. Kingz later played for the Miami Heat in the NBA Summer League this summer, while George has since transferred to Pittsburgh to keep his college career going.
The Washington move also adds another link between the Huskies and Syracuse. Former Orange player and longtime Syracuse assistant Mike Hopkins previously coached at Washington, after being in the mix for the Syracuse head coaching job before Gerry McNamara got it.
Hopkins is a Syracuse graduate who played for Jim Boeheim from 1989-93. Once branded as the Orange’s 'Coach of the Future,' he never got the job because Boeheim didn’t step down until after the 2022-23 season. Hopkins joined Syracuse’s staff in 1995 and remained there through the end of the 2016-17 season.
He took over at Washington in 2017 and stayed for seven seasons. Hopkins went 21-13 in his first year, reached as high as No. 25 in the nation, then followed with a 27-9 season that pushed the Huskies to No.
