Malachi Toney didn’t just open the season with a big game. He forced his way into the Heisman conversation in a way Miami fans won’t forget anytime soon.
In Miami’s 45-6 win over Stanford, the Hurricanes’ standout receiver turned Week 1 into a personal showcase, catching 12 passes for 234 yards and three touchdowns. The performance came in less than three quarters of action during a blowout that still managed to feel like Toney’s stage.
That yardage total mattered beyond the scoreboard. Toney broke a 42-year Miami record for receiving yards in a game, passing the mark previously held by Eddie Brown.
The timing made it even louder. Week 1 is the real start of the college football season after only a few teams played last week, and Miami arrived looking every bit like a contender after last season’s runner-up finish. Toney’s outing was the headline, but he wasn’t the only Hurricane putting up eye-catching numbers.
Transfer quarterback Darian Mensah also had a huge debut for Miami, throwing for more than 400 yards and five touchdowns against Stanford in his first game since leaving Duke. The early chemistry between Mensah and Toney was impossible to miss.
Toney’s celebration told its own story, too. After three of his touchdowns, he flashed the Heisman pose, making his own case as the game rolled on.
He’s already being mentioned with the nation’s top receivers, including Ohio State’s Jeremiah Smith and Texas star Cam Coleman. If the connection between Mensah and Toney keeps building like this, both could be in New York City when Heisman season arrives in December.
