Stanford Just Landed An Early QB Win Fans Will Notice

In a significant move for Stanford's future, four-star quarterback Hunter Fujikawa commits for 2028, promising to invigorate the Cardinal's recruiting class.

Stanford’s 2028 recruiting class got rolling Monday with a major get: Hunter Fujikawa, a four-star quarterback from Mililani High School in Mililani, Hawaii, announced his commitment to the Cardinal.

Fujikawa checks in at 6-foot-2 and 200 pounds, and 247Sports lists him as the No. 13 quarterback in the class and Hawaii’s top overall prospect. Stanford beat out 28 other Division I offers for him, a group that included Ole Miss, Oregon and UCLA.

That kind of competition matters, especially for a program landing its first four-star quarterback in four recruiting cycles. The last one was Elijah Brown from the 2024 class. Brown started Stanford’s final three games of 2025, including the Cardinal’s first Big Game win since 2020, before transferring to Washington in January.

Fujikawa told Greg Biggins of On3/Rivals that UCLA had been the team to watch after his early October visit, but his trip to Stanford changed everything. He was on hand for the Cardinal’s 31-28 win over NC State, and that visit pushed Stanford to the front.

What stood out most to Fujikawa was the program’s quarterback development under head coach Tavita Pritchard and General Manager Andrew Luck.

“Having the opportunity to learn from coaches with NFL experience and someone like Andrew Luck, who was the No. 1 overall pick and is still really involved with the program,” Fujikawa told Biggins, explaining his decision. “The coaches really believe in me there and made a point to let me know that.”

Fujikawa is still two years away from his first snap in Cardinal colors, but Stanford is clearly hoping he becomes the first piece of a strong class. The quarterback room is in transition, with sixth-year starter David Warren in his final season of eligibility. Behind him, freshman Michael Mitchell Jr. has seen limited action, completing 10 passes for 46 yards.

With Fujikawa now in the fold and 2027 commit Sione Kaho also in the pipeline, Stanford’s future at quarterback is starting to take shape.

Stanfords New-Look Debut Gave Cardinal Fans A Lot To Like

The first glimpse of Stanford under Kyle Smith looked like a team with some real bounce to it, even if the opener did not come easy. Eastern Washington pushed the Cardinal around early, but Stanford settled in after halftime and turned a shaky start into a 74-65 win, the kind of season-opening result that can steady a group still finding its footing.

Julius Price gave the Cardinal a needed scoring lift with 17 points, 11 of them after the break, while Nick Townsend filled the box score with 12 points, six rebounds and five assists. For a team trying to establish a new identity, the encouraging part was not just the final margin, but the way Stanford answered adversity and found enough balance to close the night on its own terms.
