Stanford's Ebuka Okorie Named ACC Rookie of the Week After Another Scorching Performance
There’s a new name lighting up college basketball scoreboards - and it’s time everyone starts paying attention. Stanford freshman guard Ebuka Okorie just earned ACC Rookie of the Week honors after another electric showing, this time dropping 30 points in an 88-80 win over CSUN at Maples Pavilion.
This marks Okorie’s first weekly honor of the season, but if his current trajectory holds, it likely won’t be his last.
Against the Matadors, Okorie was in full control - going 9-for-18 from the field, knocking down four triples, and sinking eight free throws. He didn’t just lead Stanford in scoring; he dictated the tempo, took over when it mattered, and once again looked like the most dangerous player on the floor.
And this wasn’t a one-off. Just a few days earlier, on December 20 against Colorado, Okorie shattered Stanford’s freshman scoring record with a 32-point explosion.
Now, with back-to-back 30-point games, he’s the first Cardinal to pull off that feat since Landry Fields did it back in January 2010. That’s 15 years ago - and Fields was a senior at the time.
Okorie? He’s just getting started.
What’s even more impressive is how quickly Okorie is climbing the national charts. After his latest performance, he now ranks fourth in the country in scoring at 22.8 points per game.
That’s not just good - that’s elite territory, especially for a freshman. He’s also second in the nation in free throws per game, showing a level of aggression and poise that belies his age.
With 83 made free throws already, he’s tied with Tim Young for 15th in Stanford’s freshman history - and we’re not even into January yet.
Stanford, now sitting at 11-2 overall, is heading into ACC play with serious momentum. The Cardinal will host Notre Dame on Tuesday, December 30, in a nationally televised matchup on ESPN2. If Okorie keeps playing like this, don’t be surprised if he becomes must-watch TV every time he steps on the court.
For now, he’s the ACC Rookie of the Week. But the way he’s trending? Bigger accolades may be just around the corner.
