Stanford returns home for a late ACC matchup against NC State on Friday night, with both teams sitting at 3-3 or better and looking to build on very different recent rhythms.
The Cardinal are 3-4 overall and 1-3 in conference play, while NC State comes in at 3-3 and 1-2 in the ACC. The game will be carried on KNBR 1050 AM.
This is only the second meeting between the programs in three years, and the first one on Stanford’s campus. NC State took the first matchup, rolling to a 59-28 win in 2024 in what was Stanford’s first 9 a.m. PT kickoff as an ACC member.
Stanford enters on a short week after Saturday’s 34-7 win over Elon, while the Wolfpack are coming off a bye. Micah Ford was the headliner last week after tying a school record with four rushing touchdowns. He’s now tied for the ACC lead with eight rushing scores, though seven of them have come in two games against non-Power 4 opponents.
There’s also a timing note for the Cardinal: this is their final home game on The Farm until the season finale on Nov. 28 against SMU. Stanford has won eight of its last 11 home games.
NC State, meanwhile, brings a steadier track record under Dave Doeren, who has guided the program to 11 bowl games in 13 years. The Wolfpack also know how quickly things can swing. They had a brutal last-second loss at Vanderbilt, fumbling in the end zone while trying to run out the clock, then answered with a win over Louisville.
Travel is part of the storyline too. NC State is playing just its second game on the West Coast in the last 66 years, after beating Cal 24-23 in 2024.
A few numbers stand out heading into kickoff. Stanford is 4-0 since joining the ACC when hosting an East Coast conference opponent in a 7:30 p.m.
PT kickoff. NC State leads the ACC and ranks 12th in the FBS in third-down conversion rate at .517.
Davis Warren has been steady for Stanford, leading the ACC in passing attempts with 234 while throwing only two interceptions; he’s also sixth in the conference with 1,630 passing yards.
On the other side, Popo Aguirre has been all over the ball for NC State. He recovered three fumbles against Louisville to lead the nation in fumble recoveries, and he also leads the Wolfpack in tackles at 9.2 per game, the second-best mark in the ACC.

Stanford Faces A Short-Week Test With Bowl Hopes Suddenly Real
Stanford heads into a short-week matchup with North Carolina State still carrying the boost of a win over Elon, and the timing could not be much more interesting for Tavita Pritchards team. After spending much of the early season trying to find traction, the Cardinal now have a chance to turn a modest burst of momentum into something more meaningful, with junior linebacker Sam Mattingly and running back Micah Ford among the players expected to help set the tone.
Fords status is worth watching after he showed up on the injury report Wednesday, but Stanfords broader outlook is what makes this one compelling. A road test against an ACC opponent can say a lot about where the Cardinal really stand, and with bowl eligibility suddenly in view, the coming stretch feels a lot bigger than the schedule might have suggested a week ago. NC State Needs A Response And CJ Bailey Knows This Opponent
Friday night brings a quick chance for NC State to steady itself after the loss to Wake Forest, and Stanford is the kind of opponent that can make the trip feel a little less predictable than it looks on paper. The Cardinal have already shown they can punch above their weight this season with an upset of Georgia Tech, even if losses to Wake Forest and Notre Dame have also been part of the picture, so there is enough recent evidence to make this one worth watching closely in ACC play.
For the Wolfpack, the interest starts with CJ Bailey and a matchup he already knows well. Bailey has taken steps forward in his career, even if his start this season has been modest, and NC State will be looking for a cleaner response after last weeks setback. Stanford has already seen Bailey once, which only adds to the intrigue as the Pack try to get back on track and avoid letting a promising start to the conference schedule slip further. [Read more 🡒]
Stanfords New-Look Roster Gets An Early Test In Oregon
Stanfords revamped basketball roster is already getting a feel for how much will be asked of it this season. Kyle Smith enters his third year with a group that looks quite different from the one that won 20 games a year ago, blending eight returners with three transfers and a top-25 recruiting class as the Cardinal begin shaping the 2026-27 campaign. It is a roster built with both immediate help and longer-term upside, especially after a program run that has produced three straight NBA draft entrants, including Ebuka Okorie going 17th overall to the Detroit Pistons.
The early signs, though, show there is still plenty to sort out before the games count. In a recent preseason exhibition against Santa Clara, Stanford fell 83-78, a useful reminder that chemistry and roles will take time to settle with so many new faces in the mix. Julius Price, Anthony Batson Jr. and Christian Bliss each gave the Cardinal a scoring boost, offering a glimpse of the pieces Smith will lean on once the regular season arrives. [Read more 🡒]
