Miami opens its season with the kind of setup that usually leaves little room for suspense. The No. 7 Hurricanes head into Week 1 as a heavy road favorite against Stanford, and the matchup comes with a fresh quarterback spotlight on Darian Mensah, the ACC’s passing yards and passing touchdowns leader from last season.
Mensah arrives in Miami after transferring from Duke, where he put together a huge year: 3,973 passing yards, 34 touchdowns and six interceptions. Now he steps into a Hurricanes offense that has already produced back-to-back NFL quarterbacks in Cam Ward, a first-round pick, and Carson Beck, a third-round pick. With Carson Beck now in the NFL, Mensah is the next man up for a program that expects to stay in the College Football Playoff conversation.
The opponent is coming off a Week 0 win, but Stanford’s result came with plenty of baggage. The Cardinal beat Hawaii by 10 after scoring 37 points and piling up nearly 500 yards of total offense, with running back Micah Ford doing the heavy lifting.
Ford carried 25 times for 99 yards and three touchdowns. Even so, Stanford gave up 20 fourth-quarter points and allowed Hawaii to make things uncomfortable late.
That kind of defensive performance is exactly why Miami looks so hard to fade here. Stanford allowed two passing touchdowns to Hawaii, and now it has to deal with a major jump in class against a Hurricanes team that was 6-2 in ACC play last season and already owns a 42-7 win over Stanford from the 2025 campaign. That meeting came in Miami, but the gap between these teams is still hard to ignore.
The numbers back up the eye test, too. Stanford finished 122nd in the country in net EPA/Play last season, while Miami ranked eighth. That’s a massive separation, and it points to a game that could get away from the Cardinal quickly if Mensah settles in early.
Miami has College Football Playoff expectations again, and Mensah is the quarterback expected to drive the push. He’s also viewed as a Heisman candidate for the 2026 season and could work his way into high first-round NFL Draft territory in 2027. Against a Stanford defense that already showed cracks in Week 0, this opener looks like a strong stage for a big debut.
