Team Mexico turned heads during the last World Baseball Classic, nearly reaching the championship game before Japan edged them out in a dramatic semifinal finish. The squad, led by the electrifying Randy Arozarena, who dazzled both offensively and defensively, won over many fans and neutrals alike. As they gear up for another run, they've hit a bump in the road with a key player bowing out of the tournament.
Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that infielder Ramón Urías will not be suiting up for Team Mexico this time around.
Urías, who just inked a one-year deal with the St. Louis Cardinals, opted to stay with his MLB team after considering his options post-signing.
In his stead, Team Mexico announced that Atlanta Braves infielder Nacho Álvarez Jr. will step in. Despite losing Urías, known for his defensive prowess and a Gold Glove winner in 2022, Mexico remains a formidable contender. Arozarena returns, backed by a trio of All-Stars from the past two seasons: Alejandro Kirk, Jonathan Aranda, and Jarren Duran.
Adding to the mix, Ramón's brother, Luis Urías, currently a free agent, is also set to join the roster. With this lineup, Team Mexico is poised to make another strong showing on the international stage.
