Don’t tell Gold Glove shortstop Masyn Winn or Silver Slugger first baseman Alec Burleson that the Cardinals are too young to make waves in 2026. These rising stars have a different vision for the season, and they’re ready to prove the doubters wrong.
In a candid chat with Cardinals Magazine, Burleson didn’t shy away from the fact that many analysts have pegged the Birds to finish last in the NL Central. But he’s not buying it.
"They’re not with us every day," Burleson pointed out. "They don’t see the conversations, the work we’re putting in.
Sure, they look at our roster and make comparisons, but we know our talent. We’re here to win as many games as possible and see where we land.
Those predictions are just based on what they see on TV, not the daily grind we’re in."
The youth of the team, with Burleson at 27 as the oldest regular and newcomer Dustin May at 28 as the oldest starter, is seen as a strength by Winn. He’s excited about the energy and camaraderie that comes with a young squad.
"We’re going to play with our hair on fire and enjoy every moment," the 24-year-old Winn said. "When things get tough, it’s usually a veteran who steps up.
But this year, with everyone being young and facing similar challenges, we’re all in it together. Going through slumps and struggles as a like-minded group could be our advantage."
The Cardinals might be underestimated, but with a blend of youthful exuberance and undeniable talent, they’re ready to challenge the narrative.
