Masyn Winn’s glove has never really needed a sales pitch. The St.
Louis Cardinals shortstop has already shown he can cover a ton of ground, and the numbers back it up. In 2025, he won what should be the first of many Gold Glove Awards at shortstop, finishing in the 100th percentile with 21 outs above average.
This year, he’s still operating at an elite level, sitting in the 98th percentile with 11 outs above average so far, and the only National League shortstop ahead of him is Dansby Swanson of the Chicago Cubs with 15.
That kind of defensive value is why Winn remains one of the most impressive overall players in baseball. He and JJ Wetherholt have given the Cardinals what looks like the best defensive middle infield in the sport, and Winn is still only 24 years old. For a team, that’s the kind of shortstop you build around.
The only real question has been what happens at the plate. Winn flashed plenty of offensive promise when he arrived as a rookie in 2024, putting up a .267/.314/.416 line with a .730 OPS, 15 home runs and 57 RBIs. But 2025 brought a dip, as a knee issue interrupted his season and his numbers slid to .253/.310/.363 with a .673 OPS, nine home runs and 51 RBIs.
He came into 2026 with a healthier knee, yet the early-season production still hasn’t matched that 2024 burst. For the year, Winn is hitting .243/.318/.324 with a .642 OPS, four home runs and 49 RBIs.
Lately, though, the bat has started to wake up. Since July 25, Winn has hit .286/.352/.365 with a .717 OPS across 18 games, adding five doubles, seven RBIs and six runs scored. That’s a noticeably different stretch than what he was giving the Cardinals earlier in the season.
If this version sticks, the conversation around Winn is going to change fast. In 2026, much of the attention has gone to Wetherholt and Jordan Walker, while Winn has been flying a little under the radar. But when he’s clicking, he belongs in that same franchise-cornerstone discussion with Walker and Wetherholt.
The last few weeks have given St. Louis plenty to feel better about. The next test is whether Winn can carry that momentum the rest of the way.
