Lance Lynn Just Put Cardinals Fans On Edge About The Second Half

As the St. Louis Cardinals gear up for a pivotal second half, Lance Lynn shares insights on the team's promising prospects and renewed vigor to chase a playoff spot.

The St. Louis Cardinals spent the first half of 2026 doing more than holding their own.

At 50-45, they finished just one game shy of the third National League wild card spot, a result that has changed the mood in St. Louis as the second half arrives.

That next stretch begins Friday night with a series against the Arizona Diamondbacks, and for the first time in a while, there’s real energy around what comes next. Former World Series champion Lance Lynn weighed in Tuesday, and he made it clear he sees a team that has already earned a different level of expectation.

"I think you're looking at a team in general that has played above expectations, and they just keep doing it, so now I think we're starting to see what we should expect from them," Lynn said.

He also pointed to the way the Cardinals handled the first half as a sign that this isn’t just a nice story - it’s a team that has put itself in position to matter in the stretch run.

"All and all I think the first half was a huge success, and I'm looking forward to seeing how they come back after the break, what it looks like, what they're ideas are going to be. Now, after the break we get to regroup and see what we're made of and what that push looks like.

It's a difference down the stretch when you go for it and you're trying to make playoff pushes. They've put themselves in a good spot to do that, so I think all fans should be excited for that."

The Cardinals do have a friendlier path ahead than the one they faced before the break. Their second-half schedule is lighter than the first, though there are still plenty of tough tests waiting, including games against the Philadelphia Phillies, Chicago Cubs, Milwaukee Brewers and New York Yankees.

That matters because the second half was where things unraveled for St. Louis a year ago. Lynn, though, sounded like someone who believes this group is carrying something different into the back nine of the season.

Twenty years after their 2006 title, the Cardinals are playing with more conviction and purpose, and if that continues, they could become a real threat as the race tightens.

There’s also a bigger-picture question hanging over the club: whether this turns into a buying opportunity at the trade deadline rather than a sell-off. That decision rests with Chaim Bloom, but the Cardinals’ standing has at least given them a chance to think in that direction. If the push continues, the payoff won’t just be in the standings - it could bring a lot of life back to the ballpark.

Cardinals May Have Just Changed Their Future With This Draft

The Cardinals walked away from the 2026 MLB Draft with a class that has already drawn rave reviews, and it is easy to see why. St. Louis made 24 selections, leaned on the extra capital it picked up through competitive balance rounds and trades, and came away with a group that included six players ranked in the pre-draft top 100.

Jim Callis of MLB Pipeline went so far as to rank the Cardinals class as the best in the league, which only adds to the sense that this could be a pivotal haul for the organization. Now the attention shifts from draft-room praise to the more delicate part of the process, with signing decisions due by the July 27 deadline and at least one notable name already heading back to college. Cardinals Fans Had To Love How This Derby Star Was Sent Home

Junior Caminero came into the 2026 Home Run Derby with the kind of power that makes any lineup stop and stare, and he showed it right away. After launching 12 homers in the first round to move on, the young slugger added another layer to his growing reputation as one of the games premier power bats, the same player who has already put up 51 home runs in the regular season and keeps looking like a future Derby fixture.

For Cardinals fans, the appeal was obvious once the bracket tightened and the field got smaller. Caminero was in position to chase a little history as the night wore on, but the matchup that ended his run delivered the sort of outcome St. Louis supporters could appreciate even without a Cardinals bat in the box. The final round of his night came down to a swing count that left just enough room for the home crowd to enjoy the result and wonder how far this Derby star might have gone with one more hot stretch. Cardinals Fans Need To See How Fast This Unique Arm Is Rising

Jurrangelo Cijntjes rise has become one of the more intriguing pitching developments in the Cardinals system, and the latest step only adds to the buzz. The switch-pitcher was recently promoted to Triple-A Memphis, putting him alongside a growing group of young arms who are starting to look closer to major league help than long-term projects. Acquired from the Mariners in the Brendan Donovan trade this offseason, Cijntje has already made himself hard to ignore because of the simple fact that he brings a rare weapon to the mound.

What has made the move even more notable is the way he has begun to settle in on the field. In two July starts, Cijntje allowed two runs while striking out 17 over 12 innings, a strong stretch that stands out even with a season ERA of 5.04. He has mostly worked right-handed, with only brief left-handed usage in games, but that unusual profile is part of what makes his climb so compelling for a Cardinals organization that is watching its Memphis rotation with real interest.
