Jordan Walker’s 2026 season has already given the Cardinals plenty to smile about, and now it has put him in line for a different kind of honor.
On Monday, Major League Baseball announced each club’s nominee for the Roberto Clemente Award, and St. Louis went with Walker, the outfielder and Home Run Derby champion. It’s another sign of how much the 24-year-old has meant to the Cardinals this year, both at the plate and away from it.
Walker co-founded “Walker’s Winners” in 2024, a program built around academic support, role modeling and character development for students. The initiative works with schools, families and community organizations to help students chase academic and life goals. He has also used engagement and fundraising to create opportunities for students from all backgrounds, while giving back to the community in his home state of Georgia.
His off-field work has gone hand in hand with a breakout year on the field. Walker became the first player in Cardinals history to win the Home Run Derby in July, edging Kyle Schwarber.
He also teamed up with Sugarfire smokehouse, a local St. Louis barbecue chain, for a limited-time promotion that let fans earn free sandwhiches for every Walker home run, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting Walker’s Winners.
At the plate, 2026 has been Walker’s best season yet. He’s hitting .281/.336/.488 with 28 home runs, 100 RBI, a 3.6 WAR and an .824 OPS, giving a Cardinals lineup that has lacked power in recent years a much-needed boost.
If Walker takes home the award, he would join Albert Pujols, Yadier Molina, Carlos Beltran, Adam Wainwright, Lou Brock and Ozzie Smith. St. Louis has produced more Clemente Award winners than any other team in Major League history, which gives Walker a chance to add his name to a list packed with Cardinals legends.
Other nominees this year include Pete Alonso, Logan Webb, Will Smith, Christian Yelich, Bobby Witt Jr, Corbin Carroll, Josh Hader and Justin Verlander.
As part of the tribute to Clemente, every nominee will wear his No. 21 on Roberto Clemente Day.

Even with that kind of turnover, the club has held up better than projected, but the missing pieces still show up in ways that matter, especially when it comes to stabilizing the rotation and tightening the infield.
Grays departure has left a noticeable gap in the starting staff, while Arenados absence is still being felt on the left side of the diamond, where his defense at third base used to be a nightly safety net.
