The St. Louis Cardinals have added another arm to the mix, taking a low-cost shot on veteran reliever Peter Strzelecki after his exit from Milwaukee.
Strzelecki elected free agency from the Brewers on July 22, and his next stop came quickly. On Saturday, Jon Heyman of The New York Post reported that Strzelecki is signing a minor league deal with the Cardinals.
"Peter Strzelecki is signing with the Cardinals. Minor league deal," Heyman wrote.
The 31-year-old has already logged 77 major league appearances since making his debut in 2022 with the Brewers. His first big league season came with immediate success, as he worked in 30 games as a rookie and posted a 2.83 ERA over 35 innings.
His 2023 season was split between Milwaukee and St. Louis, with Strzelecki appearing in 37 games and finishing with a 4.38 ERA along with a 37-to-12 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 37 innings. Then in 2024, he turned in a strong run with the Guardians, making 10 appearances and recording a 2.31 ERA with a 9-to-3 strikeout-to-walk ratio across 11 2/3 innings.
Since then, though, he hasn’t been back in the majors. This season has taken him through a few stops: he pitched in 23 games for Triple-A Nashville, putting up a 3.42 ERA in 26 1/3 innings, and also spent a brief stretch in the Yankees’ system, where he made six appearances for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
For St. Louis, the move fits the moment.
The Cardinals’ bullpen has been a problem, and the club has struggled coming out of the break, with relief pitching a major part of that issue. A minor league deal gives them a chance to see if Strzelecki can help without much risk attached.
He now gives the Cardinals another experienced option to stash as depth, and potentially call on quickly if they need help in the big leagues. With a 3.44 ERA in 77 career MLB appearances, he’s the kind of arm that can slide into the conversation fast if St. Louis needs reinforcements.
