The Brewers are trying to shake off a rough stretch, but their trade deadline move for Dustin May is already paying off in a big way.
Milwaukee was swept in a three-game set against the San Diego Padres this week, and the losses had some sting to them. Two of them came by one run, including Monday’s 3-2 defeat and Wednesday’s 4-3 loss. The Brewers had chances, and there were also some questionable bullpen decisions that helped turn a few of those games into missed opportunities.
Even with the skid, Milwaukee still sits at 74-47, though its lead in the National League Central is down to three games. The Chicago Cubs have won three straight and are tightening the race. Things do not get any easier with a four-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers beginning Thursday night.
Still, amid the frustration, Dustin May has given the Brewers something real to feel good about.
May made his second start for Milwaukee on Wednesday and was outstanding again. He worked seven shut-down innings against one of the hottest teams in baseball, gave up just one earned run, and struck out six. It was exactly the kind of outing a team wants from a deadline pickup.

That came on the heels of his first Brewers start on Aug. 6, when he threw six innings against the Pittsburgh Pirates, allowed two runs, and got the win.

Through two starts, May has allowed just three runs in 13 innings, good for a 2.08 ERA. He has also struck out 11 and walked five.
It’s a tiny sample, sure, but the early returns are hard to ignore. May has looked every bit like a difference-maker, and there’s a case to be made that he has been the best starter moved before the deadline. Now Milwaukee just needs the offense to catch up and make the most of what the rotation is giving it.
