The Astros have their new general manager in Randy Flores, but the search that led to him was anything but straightforward.
Flores, the longtime Cardinals assistant GM, was hired Friday to replace Dana Brown atop Houston’s front office. But according to MLB.com’s Brian McTaggart, the Astros also talked to Yankees bench coach Brad Ausmus about the opening the day before Flores got the job, adding another layer to a process that already had more than its share of moving parts.
Ausmus has spent the last three seasons as New York’s bench coach after serving in the same role for the Athletics in 2022. He’s best known for his time as a big league manager, leading the Tigers from 2014-17 and the Angels in 2019, along with an 18-year playing career. Ten of those seasons came in Houston, where he was teammates with Jeff Bagwell, now a senior advisor to the Astros’ baseball ops department and a close confidant of owner Jim Crane.
His front office résumé is shorter, but it exists. Ausmus worked as a special assistant to then-Angels GM Billy Eppler in 2018 and spent 2011-13 as a field executive for the Padres.
He also had previous interviews with Houston for the GM job before Brown was hired, and he spoke with the club about becoming its next manager after A.J. Hinch’s departure in the wake of the sign-stealing scandal, before the Astros eventually hired Dusty Baker.
With Flores now installed, McTaggart suggests Ausmus could still be in the mix for the managerial opening. He’s a familiar face to the organization, but his potential return would also feed the idea that Crane and Bagwell, rather than Flores, are driving the biggest baseball decisions.
That kind of perception doesn’t seem to bother Crane much. As The Athletic’s Chandler Rome put it, “Crane has never cared much for optics,” pointing to Crane’s disagreements with former GM James Click, which ended with Click’s dismissal just days after Houston won the 2022 World Series. Rome also reported that Brewers assistant GM Matt Kleine and Crane were seen at the Houston Sports Hall of Fame ceremonies a few weeks ago, a detail that helped fuel the belief that Kleine was a serious contender for the GM job.
Rome had previously reported that Kleine was offered the position Wednesday night. What happened after that isn’t clear, but the timing is notable: Ausmus apparently interviewed a day after that offer, and the Astros also took the unusual step of interviewing Oz Ocampo for an assistant GM role earlier this week before their new GM was even in place.
Whether Flores was the backup plan or not doesn’t matter now that he has the job. What does matter is how quickly he has to move. Rome noted that the drawn-out process has left Flores with limited time before the impending lockout on December 1.
One of the first decisions on his desk will be the manager’s job. If it isn’t Ausmus, McTaggart says Albert Pujols, Yadier Molina, or Morgan Ensberg could be in the conversation.
Pujols and Molina both have ties to Flores from St. Louis, and each has shown interest in managing at the big league level before.
Ensberg, meanwhile, is familiar to Flores from their college days as teammates and to the Astros from his own history with the organization, having played in Houston from 2000-07 and later working as a coach and manager in the club’s minor league system.

Cardinals Reset Is Getting Real Under Chaim Bloom
The Cardinals reset under Chaim Bloom is no longer just a talking point, it is showing up in the structure of the organization itself. Since Bloom arrived in early 2024, St. Louis has moved through a significant front office overhaul, with several familiar names departing and a wave of new hires and promotions aimed at modernizing the operation.
Randy Flores, John Mozeliak, Gary LaRocque and Matt Slater are among the executives who have exited, while some holdovers from the previous regime remain in place. For a franchise trying to turn the page without losing its institutional backbone, the changes suggest Bloom is not simply tweaking the edges, but reshaping how the Cardinals want to function going forward. Randy Flores Could Make A Cardinals Hire Astros Fans Will Notice
Randy Flores arrival as the Astros new general manager has already put a familiar Cardinals pipeline under the microscope, because one of his first big decisions will be picking a manager. With Houston expected to make that hire soon, the search could easily turn toward people Flores knows from St. Louis circles, and that has naturally put a handful of Cardinals-connected names into the conversation.
Among the possibilities are Daniel Descalso, Jon Jay, Albert Pujols, Yadier Molina and Ben Johnson, each bringing a different kind of background that could appeal to a club looking for a fresh voice. None has been confirmed for the job, but the overlap between Flores past and Houstons present gives this search an especially familiar feel for Cardinals fans watching from afar. [Read more 🡒]
Cardinals Suddenly Have A Tough Astros Decision For Their Future
Randy Flores move into the Astros front office has created an obvious new angle for the Cardinals as they think about how to reshape the roster for 2027 and beyond. If St. Louis is going to keep pushing toward a younger, more sustainable core, Houston suddenly looks like a team worth watching closely, with a few players who fit the kind of long-term upgrade the Cardinals have been trying to identify.
Hunter Brown and Jeremy Pena are the headliners in that conversation, and both come with the kind of recent performance and contract questions that make any potential pursuit complicated. There is also another Astros target in the mix, which only adds to the sense that St. Louis may have to choose carefully about where to spend its capital, because the right swing could help define the next phase of the roster, while the wrong one could leave the Cardinals still searching for answers.
