Cardinals Let A Productive Bat Walk Without A Real Shot

Despite a solid performance at Triple-A, Bligh Madris makes a strategic move to the KBO League after being released by the Cardinals, highlighting the challenges of breaking into the majors.

Bligh Madris is moving on from the Cardinals and heading overseas.

According to the first baseman/outfielder’s MLB.com profile page, St. Louis released Madris. Brian Walton of The Cardinal National reports that the 30-year-old is bound for South Korea, where he’ll play for a KBO League team.

Madris had signed a minor league deal with the Cardinals last winter and turned in a strong season at Triple-A Memphis, hitting .277/.389/.519 with 14 home runs in 284 plate appearances. Even with those numbers, he never got the call to the majors.

The path to St. Louis was crowded from the start.

Madris’ main position, first base, was already spoken for by Alec Burleson, a prominent left-handed bat. The Cardinals’ outfield mix is also heavily left-handed, while Ivan Herrera has been taking most of the designated hitter at-bats.

On top of that, a rebuilding club has been leaning toward younger players rather than a 30-year-old depth piece.

With no injuries creating a spot, Madris is taking the Triple-A production and turning it into a bigger guaranteed payday in Korea. This will be his second overseas stop in pro ball after a short run in the Australian Baseball League during the 2020-21 season.

Over his Triple-A career, Madris has hit .255/.350/.450 across 2,085 plate appearances, but that level of offense hasn’t carried over in the majors. He posted a solid .269/.324/.358 line in 75 plate appearances with the Tigers in 2024, but his career big league line sits at .204/.273/.286 over 228 plate appearances with Pittsburgh, Houston and Detroit from 2022-24.

Detroit had brought him back on a new minors contract after outrighting him following the 2024 season, but injuries limited him to 60 minor league games in 2025 and he never reached the majors.

Cardinals Phenom Just Took A Huge Step As Rotation Questions Linger

Jurrangelo Cijntjes rise through the Cardinals system has taken another meaningful step, with the switch-pitcher moving up to Triple-A as St. Louis keeps sorting through its long-term rotation picture. The organization has seen enough progress to push him to the next level, and that matters for a club that has been trying to build more pitching depth from within while also weighing how its young arms fit into the bigger picture.

Cijntjes numbers have trended in the right direction over the course of the season, with his ERA coming down and his strikeout total climbing in recent weeks. The Cardinals also have a clear investment in him after acquiring him in the Brendan Donovan deal with Seattle, and his next stretch in Memphis will go a long way toward showing how close he is to becoming part of the conversation in St. Louis. Cardinals Fans Have Every Right To Wonder About JJ Wetherholt Now

The Cardinals still have plenty of representation headed into the 2026 MLB All-Star Game, with three players and manager Oli Marmol already selected, but the omission of rookie JJ Wetherholt is the one that stands out. Wetherholt has played well enough to sit near the front of the National League Rookie of the Year conversation, so his name being left off the initial roster naturally caught attention, especially after fan voting did not get him into the starting lineup.

Now the focus shifts to whether the story is actually finished. There is still some buzz around Wetherholts All-Star case, and Cardinals fans have every reason to keep an eye on how the roster settles from here, because a late opening could change the picture for a player who has already done plenty to earn a bigger stage.
