The Athletics’ search for a new front office leader is taking shape, and two names now sitting on the radar are Brewers assistant general manager Matt Kleine and Cardinals assistant general manager Rob Cerfolio.
According to Patrick Mooney and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, Kleine is among the candidates being considered, though the report does not say whether he has interviewed for the job. Cerfolio, meanwhile, has already interviewed with the A’s, but the expectation is that he will remain with St.
Louis. The Athletic report says he is more likely to be elevated to general manager with the Cardinals, working under president of baseball operations Chaim Bloom.
Kleine has spent a long stretch in Milwaukee. He joined the Brewers’ scouting department in 2007 and was promoted to assistant general manager in November of 2023, working under president of baseball operations Matt Arnold.
That Brewers résumé carries weight. Milwaukee has built a reputation as one of the sport’s sharpest organizations, winning consistently while operating with low payrolls.
The club has reached the postseason in eight of the past nine seasons and finished with the best record in the majors in 2026. Kleine has already been linked to the Astros’ front office search, and now the A’s are apparently in the mix as well.
Cerfolio’s path is similar in that he’s been on the rise for years. He spent nearly a decade with the Guardians beginning in 2015 before the Cardinals hired him as assistant general manager in October of 2024.
At the time, John Mozeliak was still running baseball operations in St. Louis, though it had already been announced publicly that Bloom would take over after the 2025 season.
St. Louis has been in a rebuild since Cerfolio arrived, finishing just under .500 in each of the past two seasons. Last month, Bloom described the Cardinals as “status quo” when asked about the general manager opening, according to Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat.
For the A’s, the vacancy opened when they fired GM David Forst in August. Dan Feinstein is handling the role on an interim basis while the club continues its search.
Other names tied to the process include James Click, Mike Rizzo, Mike Groopman, Taylor Smith, Billy Owens Sam Fuld and Jared Banner. Aaron Gleeman of AaronGleeman.com reported that former Twins POBO Derek Falvey turned down an interview before taking a job with the Mets last month.

Cardinals Fans Already Have A Double-A Rebrand To Debate
The Cardinals Double-A club has spent the winter putting a fresh look on its home in Springfield, and now the organization has given fans something else to talk about beyond the roster. The team formerly known as the Springfield Cardinals has officially become the Ozarks Springbirds, a name designed to tie the club more closely to Springfield, the surrounding region and its place inside Cardinals Nation.
The new identity comes with updated jerseys, caps, logos and a new color scheme, and the first chance to see it all in action is set for April 2, 2027, at Route 66 Stadium. For a fan base that tends to care about tradition as much as anything, the rebrand is the kind of change that invites instant opinions, especially when a familiar minor league brand gets a complete makeover. Jordan Walker Just Gave Cardinals Fans A Bigger Year-End Debate
Jordan Walkers breakout season with the Cardinals has already given the fan base plenty to talk about, and now it has added an even bigger layer at years end. The young outfielder has been named a finalist for the 2026 Hank Aaron Award, a nod that reflects how impactful his first half was and how far his profile has climbed in St. Louis after earning an All-Star selection.
The debate now is less about whether Walker belongs among the games best bats and more about how much weight to give the second-half dip that followed, when hip pain became part of the story. If he comes away with the award, he would give the Cardinals their first Hank Aaron winner since Paul Goldschmidt in 2022, a reminder of how quickly Walker has moved from promising talent to a player shaping the conversation around the clubs future. Cardinals Fans Just Got New Fuel In The Jeff Albert Debate
The Mets decision to part ways with director of hitting Jeff Albert has put his old stop in St. Louis back in the spotlight, and Cardinals fans have plenty of reason to pay attention. Albert spent from 2018 to 2022 with the organization, a stretch that still gets picked apart whenever the clubs offense goes through a rough patch or a hitter takes a step back.
Since Albert left, the Cardinals have already changed their hitting staff, and a handful of players have turned in career years along the way. That makes the timing of this move especially intriguing for a fan base that has never fully agreed on how much influence Albert had in St. Louis, and it leaves the larger debate over his Cardinals tenure feeling very much alive.
