The Houston Astros’ managerial search could end up pulling in two familiar Cardinals names.
After Houston fired Joe Espada on Wednesday following a playoff sweep by the Chicago White Sox, the Astros are suddenly hunting for a new skipper to lead them into the 2027 season and beyond. And while St. Louis has kept Oli Marmol in place with an extension running through the 2028 season, the Cardinals’ most recognizable former stars are still being mentioned as possible manager candidates elsewhere.
Albert Pujols and Yadier Molina were both inducted into the Cardinals Hall of Fame this summer, but each is also working toward a future in the dugout. With Espada out in Houston, the Astros could become the latest club to take a serious look.
Molina has already been on the radar for other teams after the early work he has done during the Cardinals’ rebuild. Around the league, he is seen as someone who could eventually manage. Houston hasn’t had much direct history with Molina, but that may not matter if the Astros decide to explore every option.
Pujols, meanwhile, is with the Los Angeles Angels as a special assistant, though that arrangement can be ended at any time. He also brings some history with Houston.
Pujols was the NLCS MVP when the Cardinals knocked off the Astros in 2004, and he later delivered the towering home run off Brad Lidge that kept St. Louis alive in Game 5 of the 2005 NLCS.
Both men have already taken on managerial responsibilities in winter ball and in the World Baseball Classic. Pujols managed the Dominican Republic national team, while Molina managed Puerto Rico. That experience only strengthens their cases if an MLB club decides they are ready for the next step.
Their playing résumés speak loudly too. Pujols and Molina won two World Series titles and three National League pennants together in St.
Louis, and both were known as strong leaders in the Cardinals clubhouse. If either lands a first big league managerial job, the expectation is that he would walk into the room with instant credibility.
For now, the question is whether Houston makes a move. And if it does, Cardinals legends Albert Pujols and Yadier Molina could both be in the mix. If Molina gets a shot, the Cardinals would then need to fill the void because he is currently part of the team’s coaching staff and front office.

Cardinals Rotation Search Just Got Linked To A Risky Playoff Arm
The Cardinals are still sorting through what their rotation could look like going into the winter, and the market around them is hardly settled. With labor talks hanging over the offseason and the current collective bargaining agreement nearing expiration, teams are trying to do business with an eye toward both urgency and uncertainty, yet free agency and trade activity are still expected to move before any possible lockout gets in the way.
One name now tied to St. Louis is Kris Bubic, a veteran arm currently with the Dodgers who has been floated as a possible starting-pitcher option. It is the kind of pursuit that fits the Cardinals' need for rotation help while also carrying some built-in risk, since his value comes with questions about whether the upside in his past performance can translate into a dependable role for a team that needs stability. Former Cardinals Outfielder Found The Success St. Louis Never Saw
Austin Deans time in St. Louis was brief and largely forgettable, a couple of stop-and-start seasons after the Cardinals acquired him in January 2020. He appeared in only limited action in 2020 and 2021 before moving on, and for a player who arrived with some promise, the organization never really got the extended look it hoped for.
Dean has since carved out a far different path in Korea, where a move to first base with the LG Twins helped unlock the kind of power production St. Louis never got to see. Since arriving in the KBO, he has put together strong batting averages and OPS marks from 2023 through 2026, becoming one of the leagues better power bats and helping the Twins to championships in 2023 and 2025. Cardinals Gold Glove Push Centers On A Rising Defensive Duo
The Cardinals will have a familiar defensive storyline when the Gold Glove winners are announced, with three players in the mix for 2026 honors. JJ Wetherholt, Masyn Winn and Michael McGreevy were all nominated, giving St. Louis a chance to be recognized for the kind of clean infield play that has been a real strength for the club this season.
Wetherholt and Winn are the names drawing the most attention, and for good reason: both have built strong cases through their defensive metrics, while McGreevy has put himself in position as well with his work on the mound. The competition is stiff across the league, but the Cardinals have at least given themselves a legitimate shot at a standout night when the awards are handed out. [Read more 🡒]
