The St. Louis Cardinals are putting one of the biggest weekends on their calendar in the spotlight this September, and the centerpiece is a reunion for the 2006 World Series champions.
On September 11, more than 30 members of that title team are scheduled to be back at Busch Stadium for the 2006 Reunion, a nod to the group that delivered the franchise’s most recent championship. The gathering comes a day before Yadier Molina, Albert Pujols, and Bill Sherdel are set to be inducted as the newest members of the Cardinals Hall of Fame.
The club announced the reunion on August 13, saying the ‘06 champs will be back home for a special night at the ballpark.
That 2006 team arrived in the postseason with only 83 wins, but the regular-season record didn’t stop it from making a run. Tony LaRussa’s club won the NL Central, then beat the Padres and Mets to reach the World Series. The Tigers, who had won 95 games and captured the American League pennant, treated the matchup lightly and said they were going to win the trophy in three games.
That overlooked Cardinals roster still had plenty of star power. Albert Pujols finished second in MVP voting, Chris Carpenter placed third in Cy Young voting, and the team also leaned on several other stars and Hall of Famers.
As part of Friday’s celebration, many of those players are set to take a special truck ride around the warning track before the game. The Cardinals also said special event tickets are available for fans who want a closer look at the night.
David Eckstein, Scott Spiezio, Jeff Suppan, and Brad Thompson will host a pregame panel and speak with fans about the 2006 season.
