The St. Louis Blues have already spent the offseason adding young talent, but they may not be done shopping. Another name still tied to them is Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Alexander Nikishin, a left-shot piece the Blues have reportedly kept pursuing since earlier in the summer.
Julian Gaudio of The Hockey News reported that the Blues have been linked to Nikishin for a while now, and Carolina has at least been willing to hear out trade interest. Nikishin is a 24-year-old restricted free agent who remains unsigned, and while the Hurricanes are not actively shopping him in a simple, straightforward way, the door has been open enough for teams to call.
St. Louis is among those teams.
Nikishin’s NHL arrival came late, but once he got there, he made it count. He debuted near the end of the 2024-25 season, then played his first full year in 2025-26 and put up 11 goals and 23 points in 81 games. He also finished seventh in Calder Trophy voting, landed on the NHL All-Rookie team, and appeared in 17 playoff games as Carolina won the Stanley Cup.
Even with that kind of season, the Hurricanes’ left side is crowded. Jaccob Slavin, K’Andre Miller, and Shayne Gostisbehere all already sit on that side of the blue line, which helps explain why Carolina is at least listening.
Gaudio wrote, “With the defensive situation in Carolina and the rumored asking price for Nikishin around $8 million, it makes sense that the Hurricanes are gauging the market. With no resolution in sight, teams will keep calling, and according to The Athletic ‘s Jeremy Rutherford, the Blues remain one of the leading candidates.”
From St. Louis’ perspective, the fit is obvious enough to understand. A Nikishin-Philip Broberg pairing would give the Blues a heavy-duty left side for years.
The catch is the price tag. Carolina may try to use the situation to move Jesperi Kotkaniemi as well, and his $4.82 million salary has been floated as part of the conversation. If a team took on both contracts, the total cap hit would land at roughly $13 million, which is a difficult number for most clubs to absorb, including the Blues.
