Ron Duguay's Courageous Battle: A Call for Support
New York Rangers legend Ron Duguay, known for his dynamic presence both on and off the ice, is currently facing a significant challenge as he battles cancer. The 12-year NHL veteran, who played nearly 500 games for the Rangers and later became an analyst for MSG Network, is now in need of support.
Duguay's family has reached out to the community, launching a GoFundMe page to help cover the rising costs of his treatment. His daughters shared that their father has always been self-reliant, rarely asking for help, especially financially. However, the weight of his battle has become too much to bear alone.
In a heartfelt message, they explained, “Our dad has never been someone who asks for help … especially when it comes to money. But after many conversations as a family, we decided to create this fundraiser for him because we’ve seen firsthand the weight this battle has placed on him, both physically and financially.”
The journey hasn't been easy. Duguay's daughter, Shay, revealed that his earlier treatments in Florida were nearly life-threatening, prompting the family to move him to Orange County for better care. Thankfully, this decision has been beneficial, but the financial burden continues to grow.
Duguay, who has been battling Stage 4 cancer that began in the colon, has faced significant health challenges, including the loss of his appendix and gallbladder. His treatment now requires bi-weekly flights from Florida to California, adding to the already overwhelming expenses.
The GoFundMe page details the extensive costs involved, from travel to medical care, holistic therapies, and alternative healing approaches. The financial strain is immense, but the support from fans and the hockey community can make a difference.
At 68, the Sudbury native remains a cherished figure in the hockey world. He was instrumental in the Rangers' journey to the 1979 Stanley Cup final and left an indelible mark with 274 goals and 346 assists over his 864 NHL games. His standout season came in 1982 when he made the All-Star Game with 76 points in 72 games.
As Ron Duguay faces this battle, the hockey community and fans alike have an opportunity to rally around a beloved player, offering support and strength in his time of need.
