Derek Shayne is making waves in Canada’s indie music scene with his new single, "Hockey Tough." This track pays homage to the grit and determination of hockey’s enforcers, particularly former St.
Louis Blues players Kelly Chase and Tony Twist. Shayne, a lifelong Blues fan, captures the essence of what it means to be "Hockey Tough," celebrating those players who battle through injuries for a shot at the Stanley Cup.
Growing up in a small mining town in northern Canada, Shayne’s connection to the Blues runs deep. His grandfather, Paddy Ginnell, was a Blues scout for 14 years, playing a key role in bringing talents like Chase, Twist, and others to the team. Shayne’s father, Dan Ginnell, continues the legacy as a scout, contributing to the selection of stars such as Vladimir Tarasenko and Jordan Binnington.
Before diving into music, Shayne played junior hockey and spent 11 years as a scout with the Columbus Blue Jackets and New York Rangers. In 2023, he decided to follow his passion for music, blending rock with a country twist.
“I’ve always been that guy with a guitar,” Shayne shared, reflecting on his lifelong love for music. Collaborating with industry professionals in Western Canada, he’s been releasing songs and performing live shows around Alberta.
"Hockey Tough" isn’t just a tribute to the sport; it’s a heartfelt message to Chase and Darin Kimble, both of whom are battling leukemia. Shayne hopes the song brings them joy and reminds them they’re not alone in their fight.
The single’s proceeds will benefit the Siteman Cancer Center in St. Louis.
Fans can stream "Hockey Tough" on platforms like Apple Music, Spotify, and YouTube. Additionally, the third annual Puck Cancer Game on March 27 at Centene Community Ice Center offers another opportunity to support cancer research.
This charity event will feature former Blues stars like David Backes and Pat Maroon, along with celebrities such as Dierks Bentley and Sean Payton.
