Carolina Hurricanes Considered Trading For Cup-Winning Goalie But Stopped Short

Hurricanes Weigh Options but Pass on Big Trade for Binnington, Confident in Current Goalie Roster.

The Carolina Hurricanes recently explored the possibility of acquiring goaltender Jordan Binnington from the St. Louis Blues.

However, the discussions never gained much traction. While the Hurricanes did inquire about Binnington, it was more of a preliminary check-in rather than serious negotiations.

The Hurricanes were actively seeking to bolster their roster at the trade deadline, with goaltending being one area of interest. However, it seems they didn't view it as an urgent priority, opting to be strategic with their resources.

Eric Tulsky, the team's assistant general manager, mentioned, “We’ve got two goalies that we’re comfortable with and a third who’s working to return in time for the playoffs. We’re always looking for opportunities to improve, but there aren’t many goalies who represent a clear upgrade.”

This suggests that while Binnington could have been seen as an improvement, he wasn’t considered a game-changer worth a significant trade package. Tulsky further explained, “If a top-five goalie was available, it would have been an obvious choice.

We would have done whatever necessary to make that happen. Short of that, many available goalies would have added depth but not necessarily improved us significantly.”

The Hurricanes remain focused on making smart, impactful decisions that align with their long-term goals, ensuring any additions truly enhance their current lineup.
