As the Winter Olympics wrap up, the NHL trade deadline on March 6 is now taking center stage, with just 10 days left for teams to make their moves for the 2025-26 season.
Among the swirling trade rumors, Robert Thomas stands out as a potential game-changer. Two prominent Canadian teams, the Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs, are reportedly in the mix to acquire him, along with the Detroit Red Wings and New York Islanders.
According to insider David Pagnotta from The Fourth Period, Thomas is a hot commodity, ranking 14th on his trade watch board. The St. Louis Blues have made it clear they’re open to offers, but it’ll take a significant package to land Thomas, and there’s no certainty a deal will happen.
Thomas, now 26, is in the third year of his eight-year, $65 million contract with the Blues. Despite an injury-plagued season, he’s managed to tally 33 points (11 goals, 22 assists) in 42 games.
Could Montreal or Toronto land Robert Thomas?
Blues GM Doug Armstrong is demanding a hefty return for his star center, which might be a tough ask for Brad Treliving and the Maple Leafs to meet. However, the Canadiens, led by Kent Hughes, might be better positioned with their draft assets and young talent to catch the Blues' attention.
Thomas has a full no-movement clause until 2029-30, which could work in Toronto’s favor since he hails from Aurora, Ontario, and might be interested in playing for his hometown team.
This is a situation to watch closely as the deadline approaches. The Blues aren’t in a rush to make a move, which could extend negotiations into the offseason, potentially benefiting the Maple Leafs’ salary cap situation and their ability to strike a deal.
