Blues Let A Sure Road Win Turn Into A Brutal OT Loss

Despite surrendering a commanding three-goal lead, the New Jersey Devils rallied for an exhilarating overtime win against the St. Louis Blues, extending their impressive streak.

Jesper Bratt ended it in overtime, but the Devils had already put themselves through a full-night test before finally escaping with a 5-4 win over the Blues on Thursday night in New Jersey.

Bratt scored on a breakaway 1:26 into OT after Dougie Hamilton interrupted a St. Louis chance near the Devils net. The finish gave Bratt his third goal and Hamilton his seventh assist, and it rescued New Jersey after a third-period collapse turned a 4-1 lead into a tie.

The Devils still came away with their third straight victory and their seventh in eight games, while also extending their home winning streak to six. Anthony Mantha led the offense with two goals and an assist, Luke Hughes added a goal and an assist, and Jack Hughes and Brett Pesce each finished with two assists.

St. Louis clawed all the way back behind third-period goals from Mason McTavish, Philip Broberg and Dalibor Dvorsky.

The last one came after a costly turnover by goaltender Connor Hellebuyck on a clear attempt from behind the net, with Dvorsky cashing in to tie it 5:06 from the end. That goal arrived just 18 seconds after Broberg’s.

New Jersey set the tone early, pressing hard in the first period and outshooting the Blues 16-4. Jordan Binnington kept St.

Louis in it for stretches, but the Devils finally broke through after controlling a face-off in the Blues zone. Luke Hughes buried a 35-foot wrist shot at 7:34 for the opening goal.

The physical edge started to shift late in the first when Ross Johnston landed a heavy hit on Mantha. Early in the second, Jake Neighbours answered with a big hit of his own, sparking a brief fight and sending Timo Meier to the box for 17 minutes after he retaliated.

St. Louis got within 2-1 late in the second on a power-play goal by Thomas, but the Devils answered with a late burst. Jesper Boqvist and Mantha scored 19 seconds apart in the final two minutes to temporarily push New Jersey back in front by three.

Hellebuyck stopped 28 shots, while Binnington made 31 saves in a rare start.

Hellebuyck, recently acquired in a blockbuster trade from Winnipeg that he demanded, also was the winning goalie for Team USA at the most recent Olympics in Italy. The Americans beat Team Canada with Binnington in net for the gold medal.

Blues May Be Reaching A Breaking Point With Jordan Binnington

Jordan Binningtons start to the 2026-27 season has put the Blues in an uncomfortable spot, because the numbers have been hard to ignore and the margin for patience can only stretch so far. Through five starts, he has struggled to find the kind of stability St. Louis usually expects from its No. 1 goalie, and the team has already had to live with too many nights where the game tilted the wrong way early.

If the Blues decide they have reached the point where a change is necessary, the conversation quickly shifts from Binningtons play to what comes next in the crease. St. Louis would not just be dealing with the challenge of finding a new starter, but also with the ripple effect on its goaltending pipeline, where the organization would have to sort out which young option stays in place and which one becomes part of the cost of making a move. Blues Get Logan Mailloux Back At A Crucial Time For Their Blue Line

The Blues have brought Logan Mailloux back into the fold after sending him on a conditioning stint with the Springfield Thunderbirds, a timely boost for a blue line that could use another option. Acquired last season, Mailloux arrives with both NHL and AHL experience, and his return gives St. Louis another defenseman to work into the mix as it tries to settle its back end.

Maillouxs path back has been slowed by the hand injury he picked up in the preseason, and the organization has been careful in getting him back up to speed. With the recall now complete, the next step is seeing how quickly he can translate that recovery into game action and whether he can help steady a defense that has been waiting for him to rejoin it. Blues Face A Tough Blue Line Call With Mailloux Back

Logan Mailloux is back with the Blues after being recalled from his conditioning assignment with the Springfield Thunderbirds, giving St. Louis another option on the blue line as he works his way back from the preseason injury that led to surgery. His return adds some needed depth and also puts the staff in a familiar spot for this time of year, when every healthy defenseman tends to make the lineup math a little more complicated.

Now the question is how the Blues make room for him. The coaching staff has a decision to make on which defenseman comes out of the lineup, and the answer could shape not just the next game but the way the club handles its back end in the short term. With Mailloux re-entering the mix, St. Louis has to balance his return against a group that has been holding together without much margin for error. [Read more 🡒]
