Blues Get Logan Mailloux Back At A Crucial Time For Their Blue Line

After a brief conditioning assignment, Logan Mailloux is poised to return to NHL action with the St. Louis Blues amid high expectations for his season debut against the Predators.

The Blues are getting a familiar name back on the blue line.

St. Louis announced Friday that defenseman Logan Mailloux has been recalled from his conditioning assignment with the Springfield Thunderbirds of the American Hockey League, putting him on track to make his season debut Saturday afternoon on the road against the Nashville Predators.

Mailloux, 23, has been out since suffering a hand injury in the Blues’ final preseason game on September 26, when he was hurt during a fight with Chicago Blackhawks forward Cole Smith. He was placed on injured reserve after that setback.

Last season, the Belle River, Ontario native gave St. Louis a solid offensive push from the back end, finishing with five goals and eight assists for 13 points in 67 games while logging just under 17 minutes per night.

Mailloux’s path to the NHL has been anything but ordinary. He was taken 31st overall by the Montreal Canadiens in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft amid controversy.

During the 2020-21 Ontario Hockey League season, which was halted because of the COVID-19 pandemic, he was loaned to Swedish club SK Lejon. While in Sweden, he was fined for secretly taking pictures of a woman engaged in a sexual act and sharing them among his teammates.

He was later suspended for most of the 2021-22 OHL season because of that act.

After his junior career with the London Knights, Mailloux appeared in just eight NHL games across two seasons in the Canadiens’ organization, recording two goals and three assists for five points. He also piled up 26 goals and 54 assists for 80 points in 135 games with the AHL’s Laval Rocket.

The 6-foot-3, right-shot defenseman was acquired by St. Louis before last season in a deal that sent forward Zachary Bolduc the other way.

The Blues enter Saturday sitting sixth in the Central Division with 16 points through 16 games.

Blues Let A Sure Road Win Turn Into A Brutal OT Loss

A road game that looked all but settled turned into a gut punch for the Blues, who rallied from a 4-1 deficit in the third period only to leave with a 5-4 overtime loss to the Devils. St. Louis had every reason to believe it was about to steal a win after a furious push flipped the momentum late, but the comeback still ended with nothing to show for it.

Jordan Binnington did enough to keep the Blues in the fight with 31 saves, while New Jersey got 28 stops from Connor Hellebuyck to hang on through the chaos. The loss stings not just because St. Louis nearly completed the escape, but because it turned what should have been a sure road victory into a reminder of how quickly one breakdown can undo an otherwise impressive rally. Blues May Be Reaching A Breaking Point With Jordan Binnington

Jordan Binningtons start to the 2026-27 season has put the Blues in an uncomfortable spot, because the numbers have been hard to ignore and the margin for patience can only stretch so far. Through five starts, he has struggled to find the kind of stability St. Louis usually expects from its No. 1 goalie, and the team has already had to live with too many nights where the game tilted the wrong way early.

If the Blues decide they have reached the point where a change is necessary, the conversation quickly shifts from Binningtons play to what comes next in the crease. St. Louis would not just be dealing with the challenge of finding a new starter, but also with the ripple effect on its goaltending pipeline, where the organization would have to sort out which young option stays in place and which one becomes part of the cost of making a move. Blues Face A Tough Blue Line Call With Mailloux Back

Logan Mailloux is back with the Blues after being recalled from his conditioning assignment with the Springfield Thunderbirds, giving St. Louis another option on the blue line as he works his way back from the preseason injury that led to surgery. His return adds some needed depth and also puts the staff in a familiar spot for this time of year, when every healthy defenseman tends to make the lineup math a little more complicated.

Now the question is how the Blues make room for him. The coaching staff has a decision to make on which defenseman comes out of the lineup, and the answer could shape not just the next game but the way the club handles its back end in the short term. With Mailloux re-entering the mix, St. Louis has to balance his return against a group that has been holding together without much margin for error. [Read more 🡒]
