Viral Rugby Star Makes Surprising South Carolina Commitment

Irish rugby standout Neff Giwa makes waves in the college football scene with an unexpected commitment to South Carolina, underscoring the power of a viral video and strategic recruiting.

In a whirlwind two weeks, Neff Giwa, a towering 6-foot-7 1/2, 295-pound offensive tackle from Ireland, has taken the college football recruiting scene by storm, despite never having played American football. This remarkable journey began with a mere three-second video clip posted by Brandon Collier, the mastermind behind Premier Prospects International (PPI), based in Germany. The clip showcased Giwa's raw talent and athleticism, sparking immediate interest from top college programs.

Giwa, who has a background in rugby and boasts an impressive wingspan with 37-inch arms, quickly became a hot commodity. Schools like Miami, Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina, and SMU were quick to extend scholarship offers, captivated by his potential. Ultimately, the young Irishman decided to commit to the South Carolina Gamecocks, where he will join the team for the 2026 season.

The Gamecocks' offensive line coach, Randy Clements, played a pivotal role in Giwa's decision. Clements' track record of developing international talent, including German lineman Sebastian Vollmer and Canadian Danny Watkins, resonated with Giwa during his visit to South Carolina.

Collier, a former UMass defensive tackle, has been instrumental in placing international athletes in major college programs, with around 100 players making their mark, including several who started in the SEC last year. However, even he was taken aback by the rapid response to Giwa's video, which was posted on March 16. Within minutes, coaches from various prestigious programs were reaching out to learn more about the promising prospect.

The recruiting journey took Giwa and Collier across the United States, visiting campuses from Ohio State to Miami. Despite the initial lack of interest from some schools, the video clip filmed during a workout in Toronto ignited a frenzy. Notably, Miami's Mario Cristobal was among the first to express keen interest, underscoring the impact of social media in modern recruiting.

Giwa's decision to join South Carolina was influenced by the welcoming atmosphere and the success of fellow Collier protégé, Justin Okoronkwo, the Gamecocks' leading tackler from Munich. After a whirlwind tour of potential schools, Giwa felt a strong connection with South Carolina, ultimately choosing them over other suitors like Miami and Texas.

Reflecting on the experience, Giwa expressed amazement at how quickly his life changed. "It's been crazy, man. A crazy experience," he shared, highlighting the power of social media and Collier's network in transforming his prospects from obscurity to a promising future in American football.
