Torrian Gray Reveals Big Plans For South Carolina DBs

Torrian Gray outlines a promising future for South Carolina's defensive backs with strategic insights and confidence in developing homegrown talent.

South Carolina's defensive backs coach, Torrian Gray, is gearing up for his sixth season with the Gamecocks, stepping into a new role as co-defensive coordinator. With a mix of returning talent and fresh faces in 2026, Gray is tasked with filling the gaps left by cornerback Brandon Cisse, who’s off to the NFL, and safety DQ Smith, who wrapped up his eligibility last year.

Despite these departures, Gray has a solid lineup with Vicari Swain and Judge Collier at cornerback, and Peyton Williams, David Bucey, and Kendall Daniels returning at safety. Gray shared insights into his unit's progress during a recent press conference, expressing satisfaction with their effort and intent.

"Pleased with the guys. They have the right intent," Gray noted.

"Love their work ethic. We’re just a little less experienced, but I love the group and the way they're working."

Gray's transition to co-defensive coordinator hasn't drastically changed his role. "My input was heavy as pass game coordinator, and it's the same now," he explained, emphasizing his continued influence on the team’s strategy.

Spring practice has been a proving ground for the cornerbacks. Vicari and Judge are having a solid spring, with Judge making a comeback from injury.

Damarcus Leach is also making strides, while young players like Kosci Barnes and Triston Lewis are getting crucial reps. Solomon is sidelined with an injury, giving others more opportunities.

Gray is confident in his roster, preferring to develop high school recruits over relying heavily on transfers. However, he remains open to bolstering the lineup if necessary.

"I like our guys and developing them. If we need help, we're not opposed to it," he said, highlighting the importance of nurturing homegrown talent.

J’Zavien Currence is one to watch, as Gray believes he’s positioned himself well for significant playing time. "J'Zavien has attacked the playbook and is learning our techniques," Gray remarked.

The nickel spot is seeing healthy competition, with Jalon Kilgore and others vying for time. Jaquel Holman and Cedric Cisse are also in the mix, adding depth to the position.

Zahbari Sandy is on a path to readiness by summer, though he's currently limited in spring activities. "The goal is to get him ready this summer," Gray mentioned, indicating a cautious approach to his development.

Having Travian Robertson back is a morale booster for the team. After overcoming significant health challenges, Robertson’s presence is invaluable. "It's awesome to see him back," Gray said, reflecting on Robertson's journey and contribution to the coaching staff.

Gray's blend of strategic insight and developmental focus sets a promising tone for the Gamecocks as they navigate this transitional phase. With a mix of seasoned players and emerging talent, South Carolina's defensive backs are poised for growth under his guidance.
