Stingrays Are Off To A Start South Carolina Hasn't Seen In Years

The South Carolina Stingrays formidable offense drives them to an unprecedented start, as they dominate the Savannah Ghost Pirates and remain unbeaten this season.

The South Carolina Stingrays kept rolling on Oct. 30, turning in their most explosive offensive night of the season and extending their unbeaten start to five games with a 7-3 win over the Savannah Ghost Pirates.

The crowd of 4,223 at the North Charleston Coliseum saw a team that looked loose, fast and dangerous from the jump. South Carolina scored seven goals for a season high, cashed in on the power play for the fifth straight game to open the year and got multi-point nights from seven different skaters.

“We were just playing hard,” Stingrays forward Alex Gaffney said. “We were playing fast, we were playing quick in transition. We've got very skilled guys, so the goals were going to come.”

That kind of night pushed South Carolina to 5-0-0-0, its first five-game winning streak to open a season since 2002-03.

Josh Wilkins started the scoring nine minutes into the first period, taking a breakout pass, making a move around a defender and firing home the opener. Savannah answered almost immediately, turning a rush into the South Carolina zone into a scramble in front that ended with a tip-in goal to tie it 1-1.

The Stingrays got the last word in the opening frame. With less than a minute left, Gaffney buried a cross-crease pass from Kyle Jackson for his first professional goal, sending South Carolina into the second period with a 2-1 edge.

“It was awesome,” Gaffney said. “A lot of hard work. It was a great pass by Jackson, and Wilkins as well on the line, so I'm glad I got it.”

The second period turned into a track meet. Savannah tied it early when Philip Tresca beat Ben Kraws on the power play, the first man-advantage goal South Carolina has allowed this season.

South Carolina answered right back with its own power-play strike. Zack Andrusiak hammered a slapshot that deflected off Ryan Sandelin’s left shoulder pad and into the net to make it 3-2. Twenty seconds later, Jackson found space in front and scored to stretch the lead to 4-2.

Savannah wasn’t done. Max Dorrington answered just over a minute later with a backhand finish, trimming the margin back to one.

But the Stingrays kept finding openings. With a little more than five minutes left in the period, Tyler Weiss broke free on a breakaway and scored to make it 5-3. South Carolina had two more breakaway chances and another power play after that, but the score stayed there heading into the third.

Weiss helped put it away early in the final period, setting up Josh Prokop from behind the net for Prokop’s first goal as a Stingray. Prokop then added his second of the night with three minutes left to finish off the scoring.

“Whenever you start undefeated, especially 5-0, you can't ask for anything better,” Gaffney said. “We just got to keep going.”

Kraws stayed perfect in net as well, improving to 4-0 with 25 saves.

Porter-Gaud Brings Real Playoff Momentum Into A Run Clemson Fans Will Notice

Porter-Gaud closed the regular season with a comeback that should carry some real confidence into November, erasing a 21-point deficit to beat Pinewood Prep 31-21 in its finale. The win lifted Porter-Gaud to 6-4 and came against a Pinewood team that finished 8-2, giving the Cyclones a meaningful boost as both programs head into the SCISA Class AAAA state playoffs.

For Porter-Gaud, the timing matters almost as much as the result. A rally like that can change the mood around a team heading into the postseason, and it gives the Cyclones a little momentum that Clemson fans around the area will notice as the bracket takes shape. Pinewood Prep is still moving on too, but Porter-Gauds finish was the kind of statement that can make a playoff path feel a lot more interesting. [Read more 🡒]

Gamecocks Let Another Winnable Match Slip Away At The Worst Time

South Carolina had another chance to bank a result at home, but Marshall left Stone Stadium with a 2-1 win in Sun Belt Conference play. Haruhi Taneda and Goncalo Machado scored for the Thundering Herd, while Jamie Grayson provided the Gamecocks lone goal in a match that again left South Carolina searching for a way to turn moments into points.

With the regular season winding down, head coach Tony Annan pointed to the mistakes that continue to cost his team in tight matches. For a group trying to steady itself at the right time, the frustration is not just the loss itself, but how familiar the script is becoming as the margin for error keeps shrinking. [Read more 🡒]

Vols Face A Massive Test After Their Most Brutal Loss Yet

Tennessees season has already taken a sharp turn, going from a home win over Alabama to a loss at South Carolina in the span of a week. Now the Vols get a much-needed breather before returning to Neyland Stadium on Nov. 7 for a matchup with SEC leader Kentucky, a game that suddenly carries even more weight as they try to steady themselves.

The schedule does not get any easier from there, either. Tennessee still has Texas A&M, LSU and Vanderbilt left in the regular season, which means the margin for error is thin as the Vols try to regroup from their most painful setback yet and avoid letting one rough afternoon spiral into something bigger.
