South Carolina's baseball team is gearing up for a season that promises excitement, especially with two of their top pitchers, Alex Philpott and Cullen Horowicz, making strides toward a comeback after elbow issues.
Head coach Paul Mainieri shared some promising updates following the Gamecocks' 12-2 victory over Gardner-Webb. Both Philpott and Horowicz have started throwing again after consulting with doctors.
"The news is all good," Mainieri noted, emphasizing the positive feedback from their initial throwing sessions. While the timeline for their return isn't set in stone, there's optimism they could be back in action sooner rather than later, depending on their recovery progress.
Philpott, who was in contention for a starting role before his injury, has shown potential with an impressive stint at Florida, boasting 72 strikeouts over 67 innings. Meanwhile, Horowicz, known for his blistering fastball that can hit 100 mph, is transitioning from a hitter to a full-time pitcher, a move that began at Samford in 2025.
The Gamecocks are set to hit the field again for the Salute the Troops weekend at Founders Park. They'll face Army on Friday at 2 p.m., with the game broadcast on SEC Network +.
Later that evening, Air Force will take on Navy at 6 p.m. Fans can look forward to a weekend of thrilling baseball action, with South Carolina eager to showcase their talent and depth on the mound.
