South Carolinas Return Game Just Put Nyck Harbor On Notice

South Carolina's special teams are seeing a shake-up as Matthew Smiley discusses the move to Jaquel Holman at kick returner, highlighting the impact on the game.

South Carolina’s kickoff return job has shifted, and special teams coordinator Matthew Smiley says the move is about finding the right balance of reps and explosiveness.

The Gamecocks opened the season with Nyck Harbor handling kickoff returns, but a few games ago they made the change to Jaquel Holman. Holman first took over in the third quarter against Mississippi State and has held the role since.

Smiley said Wednesday that both players have gotten chances, but Holman’s workload and growth have helped make the switch make sense.

"They both have reps on the season. Jaquel's been doing a good job.

Obviously, Nyck plays a lot more reps, whether it be punt reps, offensive reps than Jaquel does playing defensive reps," Smiley said. "So that's good to get be able to get Jaquel going, and I think he's getting better and better with each one of his reps, practice and game."

Harbor has been productive on kickoff returns over the last two seasons, bringing back 16 kicks for 22.8 yards per attempt. He opened the 2026 season with four returns at 19.3 yards per attempt.

Holman already showed what he can do last season, when he logged seven kickoff returns for 21.3 yards per attempt. The sophomore from Blackville, S.C. has picked up where he left off, averaging 23 yards on four returns so far.

Smiley said Holman’s speed and mindset stood out when he got his chance against Mississippi State.

"Obviously, we didn't have any ops on kick return, they were all touchbacks last week. But going back to Mississippi State when he went in later in that game, he has the speed.

He's a fast guy, time speed, but his willingness to attack vertically. He is fearless when he's returning the ball, so he's willing to get up to speed and get going."

That confidence in Holman wasn’t new. During the preseason, Smiley said he liked what he saw from Holman on film from last season.

"He's a guy back there that's dangerous and fast," Smiley said on Holman in the preseason.

Smiley also pointed to the extra yardage Holman can create after first contact, another trait that matters in the return game.

"He had a return against Mississippi State where he got five, six, seven yards after contact. So that's always huge at that position," Smiley said. "Being able to have great ball security, but being fearless hitting that thing vertical, putting the stress on the coverage team."

South Carolina Is Still Chasing A Defensive Line Target To Watch

South Carolina is continuing to work the board on the defensive line, and 2027 prospect Gehrig Felix has emerged as a name worth watching. The South Alabama commit made a visit to the Gamecocks for their game against Kentucky, where he met with coaches and spent time talking through how he could fit into Travian Robertsons defense.

Felix has been productive this senior season, with 19 tackles and four for loss in six games, and that kind of early impact is exactly why South Carolina remains interested. For the Gamecocks, the visit was another chance to make a pitch to a player already pledged elsewhere, and the next steps in that evaluation will be worth tracking. [Read more 🡒]

Florida Is Suddenly Facing A Dangerous Spot Before Its Brutal Stretch

Floridas upcoming run is getting attention for all the wrong reasons, and the Week 6 pick against South Carolina only adds to the unease. The broader upset trends through Week 5 suggest underdogs have not been cashing in at the usual rate, especially in Group of 6 versus Power 4 games, but this matchup still stands out because of how the two teams have looked and what each side has coming next.

South Carolina has its own questions to sort through, but the Gamecocks are being viewed as the side better positioned to take advantage if Florida is even a little off. One wrinkle worth watching is Dylan Stewarts status, with his suspension situation still listed as TBA, leaving one more piece of the puzzle unresolved as the Gamecocks line up for a game that could say plenty about both teams. South Carolina Faces One Huge Florida Question Before Kickoff

South Carolina heads into Saturdays trip to Ben Hill Griffin Stadium still searching for traction in SEC play, and the challenge gets no easier against No. 16 Florida at 12:45 p.m. on SEC Network. The Gamecocks are 2-3 overall and 0-3 in the league, while the Gators come in at 4-1 and 3-1 in conference play, which gives this matchup a clear weight for a South Carolina team trying to steady itself before the schedule gets any harsher.

Beyond the records and the setting, the pregame picture is shaped by the usual Saturday considerations that can swing a road game: South Carolinas injury situation, the betting line that tilts toward Florida, and a weather forecast that could factor into how the afternoon unfolds. For the Gamecocks, the bigger question is how many answers they can find in a place where the margin for error tends to shrink quickly. [Read more 🡒]
