South Carolina Stuns Clemson as Gunther Dominates Series Opener

Josh Gunther shines in his college debut, leading South Carolina to a decisive victory over Clemson in their series-opener.

South Carolina bounced back in style with a commanding 7-0 victory over Clemson, kicking off their three-game series with authority. Josh Gunther, making his debut start for the Gamecocks, was nothing short of spectacular. From the first pitch to the last, he owned the mound, leaving Clemson scrambling after a decisive four-run third inning.

Gunther's performance was a masterpiece, allowing just three hits over seven scoreless innings and striking out a career-high 10 batters. He was unflappable, encountering only minor turbulence in one inning, but quickly regaining control.

"It was obviously a great win for our team, our program, our university, our state," said head coach Paul Mainieri, now in his second year. "Josh Gunther was the story of the game. Our pitching set the tone, and while we didn’t hit a lot, each hit was crucial."

This victory marked South Carolina's first Friday night win against Clemson since 2019, a significant milestone in this storied rivalry.

"I'll be honest, I was 100 percent nervous," admitted Gunther. "Being at Carolina, I know how much this series means. I focused on my mental game all week, trying to stay sharp and attack them."

The game remained hitless until South Carolina broke through in the third. Patrick Evans led off with a single, and the bases were soon loaded. A wild pitch brought in the first run, followed by Ethan Lizama's RBI single and a Clemson error that allowed another run to score.

"Our mindset is to pressure every pitch," Lizama explained. "We aim to get our best swing off and capitalize on opportunities."

KJ Scobey added an RBI single to cap off the inning, tying their season-high for runs in a single frame.

Gunther's only real challenge came in the fifth. After a throwing error and a double, Clemson had two in scoring position, but Gunther coolly struck out the next two batters to escape unscathed.

"My mentality was one inning at a time," Gunther said. "I wanted to throw up as many zeroes as possible for our team."

Five of Gunther's seven innings ended with strikeouts, underscoring his dominance.

"He was really something special," Mainieri praised. "I think he's going to keep pitching well for us all year."

The Gamecocks added insurance runs in the sixth and seventh innings, with Scobey doubling in a run and a wild pitch and error bringing home two more.

Alex Valentin took over for Gunther, striking out all six batters he faced to seal the win.

South Carolina now aims to clinch the series and earn the Palmetto Series point on Saturday, with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. at Segra Park in Columbia. The game will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
