South Carolina Showed One Early Strength Fans Will Love

In a key pre-season tune-up, South Carolina's men's basketball team demonstrated their depth and scoring prowess by overcoming Wake Forest in a closely contested exhibition game.

South Carolina’s first exhibition of the season had the feel of a game the Gamecocks controlled in stretches before finally putting away. A second-half surge did the heavy lifting, and the result was a 78-69 win over Wake Forest on Oct. 15 at the Rock Hill Sports & Event Center in Rock Hill, S.C.

The Gamecocks got to halftime with a 39-34 lead after shooting 12-of-28 from the field and a sharp 12-of-13 at the free throw line. They were already spreading the offense around by then, with six different players scoring in the opening 20 minutes and four of the five starters getting involved.

Jakub Nečas set the tone early, scoring 10 points and grabbing three rebounds in the first half. South Carolina had briefly been behind 11-8 five minutes in, but an 8-0 run flipped the game and the Gamecocks never gave the lead back.

That cushion grew quickly after the break. Camden Heide opened the second half with back-to-back threes, pushing the lead to 11 and helping South Carolina build as much as a 17-point advantage midway through the period.

Wake Forest made one last run, trimming the margin to five with 2:48 left after being down 16 with four minutes to play. South Carolina answered with six of the final eight points and closed out the nine-point victory.

Nečas finished as the game’s top scorer with 22 points on 6-of-10 shooting, including 3-of-4 from deep. He also added five rebounds and went 7-of-8 at the line.

Heide scored 14 and was perfect on six free throw attempts. Freshman guard Marcus Johnson logged a team-high 34 minutes and contributed 13 points and four assists.

Juan Fernández gave the Gamecocks a steady boost in the starting group, posting 10 points and eight rebounds in 22 minutes.

The free throw line was a major part of the night, with both teams combining for 59 attempts. South Carolina finished 26-of-29, while Wake Forest went 21-of-30.

The teams matched each other at 23-of-54 from the floor, but Carolina made four more threes, going 6-of-20 from long range. South Carolina also controlled the glass, outrebounding Wake Forest 40-30, and the bench edge went to the Gamecocks, 29-21.

Carolina led for the final 33:09.

South Carolina has one more exhibition ahead, hosting Campbell at Colonial Life Arena on Sunday, Oct. 25. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.

South Carolina Still Has One Big Problem After The Florida Win

The bye week arrives for South Carolina at a good time, even after the momentum of the win over Florida, because the season still has the feel of a team searching for its best version. At 3-3 overall and 1-3 in the SEC, the Gamecocks have shown both sides of the coin this fall: a rushing attack that has been among the leagues best and stretches of play that have let leads slip away.

There is enough here to believe the foundation is real, but the week off also puts a spotlight on the loose ends that have kept the season volatile. South Carolina has done a solid job protecting the quarterback and has been the victim of too many dropped passes and too many explosive throws allowed, which is a tough combination when every conference game already feels like it matters twice as much. South Carolinas Rebuilt Roster Showed Promise And One Clear Concern

South Carolinas exhibition win over Wake Forest offered a useful early look at how Lamont Paris rebuilt roster is coming together. The Gamecocks controlled the game enough to leave Rock Hills Sports and Event Center with a 78-69 victory, and there were encouraging signs from key contributors as the group continues to settle into a new season and a new structure.

Jakub Necas led the way with 22 points, while Marcus Johnson added 13 in a game that showed some of the scoring balance Paris will need. Even so, the bigger takeaway was the work still ahead, especially on press defense and rotations, two areas the staff is clearly still trying to sharpen before South Carolina gets into its next exhibition and, eventually, the regular season. South Carolinas Rebuilt Roster Already Revealed One Early Trend

South Carolinas first exhibition offered an early look at how quickly the rebuilt roster is starting to come together. In a 78-69 win over Wake Forest, the Gamecocks rolled out a starting group built around four transfers and one freshman, a clear sign of just how much turnover Lamont Paris has had to manage as he pieces together this years rotation.

Several newcomers made their presence felt, giving the staff an encouraging first read on how the mix might function once the games count for real. Paris also had some player-performance notes and injury updates to sort through afterward, which is exactly the kind of early October checkpoint that can help clarify where this group is headed before the regular season arrives.
