The noise around South Carolina’s quarterback spot is getting harder to ignore, and Shane Beamer made it clear Tuesday that he’s not about to let outside pressure drive the decision.
With a segment of the fan base and some in the media pushing for Cutter Woods to replace LaNorris Sellers, Beamer was asked what his message is to people calling for a change. His answer put the focus back on the building, not the crowd.
"I see in practice every week and people outside of his building don't get to decide that," Beamer said. "We win as a team (and) we lose as a team.
There are some throws that LaNorris would like to have back or throws that he would like to make, absolutely. But there's also some plays that we've made or didn't make on defense and special teams that every single person would like to have back.
"As I told LaNorris, when you lose a football game, the two people that get the most blame are the head coach and the quarterback. It's no different this week and worry about what we can control.
LaNorris needs to be better. I need to be better.
Our entire team needs to be better. Competition is a core value of this program, so yeah, we've got really good quarterbacks.
"LaNorris is a good quarterback. Cutter Woods is a good quarterback and we're always competing in practice and working and striving to be our best each and every day, each and every week.
And we weren't good enough on Saturday night. None of us were, starting with me."
The conversation is being fueled by Sellers’ two-interception game against Mississippi State, a performance that helped send South Carolina to its first loss of the 2026 season. He finished 25-of-40 for 282 yards, with two touchdowns and two picks, while averaging 7.1 yards per attempt and posting a 128.22 rating.
That kind of outing naturally brings scrutiny, especially with South Carolina sitting at 2-10 over its last 12 power conference games dating back to the Citrus Bowl in December of 2024. When the results keep stacking up like that, the quarterback becomes the easiest target.
Still, the Mississippi State stat line wasn’t the worst Sellers has put together in a South Carolina loss. On pure numbers, it was better than what he produced last season against LSU, Oklahoma, Alabama and Ole Miss, and some of those marks were also better than what he posted at Texas A&M in 2025. The Gamecocks went 0-5 in those games.
None of that erases the frustration around his recent play, and none of it changes the fact that South Carolina hasn’t gotten enough of the one thing that matters most.
