South Carolina Quietly Has One Of Its Best Stories Back Again

Maurice Brown II's transition from walk-on to essential team player places him among college footballs top contenders for the prestigious Burlsworth Trophy.

Maurice Brown II’s rise from walk-on to scholarship player has put him back in the Burlsworth Trophy conversation.

South Carolina’s senior tight end was announced as one of 65 nominees for the award for the second straight year, keeping him in the mix for the honor that goes to the nation’s top former walk-on. The Burlsworth Trophy celebrates college football players who started without a scholarship and earned their way through performance, determination and perseverance.

Brown’s path to this point has been anything but ordinary. He walked on at South Carolina in January 2023 after a short stop at the United States Military Academy in West Point, then carved out a role first on special teams and later in the Gamecock offense.

This season, the Upper Marlboro, Md. native has already set new career highs with 10 catches for 100 yards and two touchdowns through the first eight games. He’s also delivered in some of South Carolina’s biggest moments, including an overtime touchdown grab against No.

24 Kentucky, a 2-point conversion run at No. 8 Alabama and key third-down catch-and-run conversions in ranked wins over No.

16/15 Florida and No. 11/11 Tennessee.

Brown has also been a major part of the blocking that has fueled the SEC’s No. 1 rushing offense, which is averaging 217.5 yards per game. South Carolina’s 5.7 yards per carry ranks No. 7 nationally and No. 2 in the SEC behind only Georgia.

Quarterback LaNorris Sellers is No. 5 in the SEC with 603 rushing yards, while running back Matt Fuller is No. 7 with 530. Sellers is averaging 6.2 yards per rush, and Fuller is at 5.6, the top two marks in the league.

Brown has chipped in on special teams as well and has two tackles this season.

He earned a scholarship before the LSU game in 2024 and blocked a punt against the Tigers. Brown was also nominated for the Burlsworth Trophy in 2025, and he has already earned his undergraduate degree in public health.

The Burlsworth Trophy Selection Committee will name semifinalists on Nov. 10 and three finalists on Nov. 17. The 2026 winner will be revealed at the annual Burlsworth Trophy Award Show on Dec. 7 at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Ark.

The award was created in 2010 to honor Brandon Burlsworth, a 1994 walk-on at Arkansas who became an All-American. Burlsworth was killed in an automobile accident 11 days after the Indianapolis Colts selected him in the 1999 NFL Draft.

South Carolinas special teams quietly have become one of the steadier parts of the operation, and Mason Love is a big reason why. South Carolina Faces A&M With More Than Bowl Eligibility At Stake

South Carolina heads into its matchup with Texas A&M riding a three-game winning streak, and the timing gives this one a little extra weight. A win would not only extend the run, it would also push the Gamecocks into bowl eligibility, a meaningful marker after a season that has started to find its footing. The recent stretch has changed the feel around the team, and now the next step comes against an opponent that has already been part of the conversation for a while.

Shane Beamers earlier prediction about the Gamecocks playoff prospects has added another layer to the week, even if the immediate task is much more straightforward. There is also the memory of last years game against Texas A&M, which gives South Carolina a little added motivation as it tries to keep building on its momentum. For a team that has finally put together some positive results, this is the kind of late-season game that can shape how the rest of the year is remembered. [Read more 🡒]
