South Carolina Makes Clear Elite Eight Push Statement

South Carolina aims to clinch an Elite Eight spot by refining their strategy and execution against Oklahoma, leaving past disappointments behind.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - A Familiar Showdown Looms

The stage is set for a thrilling rematch as South Carolina prepares to face Oklahoma for a coveted spot in the Elite Eight. The Sooners are one of the few teams to have bested the Gamecocks this season, and their last encounter was anything but ordinary.

Back on January 22, in Norman, the Sooners pulled off a 94-82 victory in overtime. It wasn't a last-second miracle; it was a decisive win, fueled by South Carolina's sluggish defense and a stellar performance from Oklahoma's freshman sensation, Aaliyah Chavez, who poured in 15 points during the extra period.

As the two teams gear up for this clash, the question buzzing around is whether Oklahoma can replicate their success or if South Carolina will assert their dominance and continue their march toward the Final Four.

Reflecting on their previous meeting, South Carolina's guard Ta’Niya Latson noted, “We just went out there thinking we were going to play our game, and they hit us hard right from the start. That’s something we’ve worked on since.”

It was a tough outing for the Gamecocks, with Latson struggling at 1 of 10 from the field and Joyce Edwards managing just 3 of 12. Meanwhile, Madina Okot faced challenges on defense, allowing Raegan Beers to capitalize repeatedly. Despite these hurdles, South Carolina had a chance to clinch the game in regulation, but confusion during a crucial play left them empty-handed.

Now, with the rematch on the horizon, the Gamecocks are determined to bring a different energy. Latson emphasized the importance of sticking to the game plan, particularly in containing Chavez, who was lethal in overtime last time.

Defensively, South Carolina knows they must prevent Chavez and her fellow guards from feeding Beers in the paint, as she poses a significant scoring threat. Okot, tasked with guarding Beers, explained, “We need to push her out of the paint and limit her touches.”

The Gamecocks plan to rotate defenders on Chavez, with Raven Johnson leading the charge to disrupt her rhythm. They'll also keep a close watch on Payton Verhulst, who has the potential to catch fire on any given night.

Coach Dawn Staley has made it clear that the focus isn't on avenging the January loss but on reaching the heights this team is capable of achieving. South Carolina aims to refine their strategy, correct past mistakes, and showcase the prowess that has brought them this far.

As game time approaches, both teams are ready to leave it all on the court, with South Carolina eager to prove their mettle and continue their journey in the tournament.
