South Carolina is still watching South Alabama commitment Gehrig Felix, and the 2027 defensive lineman got a closer look at the program Saturday when he visited Williams-Brice Stadium for the Gamecocks’ game against Kentucky.
Felix, who stands 6-foot-6 and 255 pounds, said the visit gave him a better feel for South Carolina’s staff and how they view him. He has been committed to South Alabama since July, but the Gamecocks are continuing to evaluate him.
"It went really well. I got to spend some time with Coach T-Rob before and after the game a bit.
He knows his stuff and been around. I like that," Felix said.
"Coach Lafayette Stewart is a great guy too, he showed me and my dad around and treated us great from the time we got on campus until we left, and answered all our questions."
South Carolina defensive line coach Travian Robertson and Felix discussed how the prospect could fit into the defense and how he might develop once he gets on a college strength and nutrition plan.
"We talked about how they see me fitting into the defense and developing. Coach T-Rob liked my film so far and wants to finish evaluating me which I understand," Felix said. "That's just a part of the process."
Robertson also laid out where Felix could line up.
"Coach Rob said with my frame and athleticism he could see me playing 3-tech inside and a little outside, depending on how my body develops," Felix said, "But they are looking for long athletic guys who can attack from that position and that's what I like to do. From what I noticed at the game, everyone was attacking and trying to get to (the QB).
They got a few sacks. I understand at my current size and then getting college level training and nutrition I'll get bigger without losing speed.
"(Robertson) talked about developing me and using my versatility across the line. I like that because I feel like I can do more than just play one spot.
It's all football. I notice they play freshman so becoming a useful piece is my goal."
Felix has put together a strong senior season so far at Archer High School in Lawrenceville, Ga. Through six games, he has 19 total tackles with four for loss.
Even though South Carolina came up short against Kentucky, Felix said he still enjoyed the atmosphere.
"I know it was hard on the fans being in OT but we enjoyed being around them," he said. "The game was exciting. Definitely enjoyed the atmosphere at South Carolina."

South Carolinas Return Game Just Put Nyck Harbor On Notice
South Carolina made a noticeable tweak on special teams against Mississippi State, turning its kickoff return duties from Nyck Harbor to Jaquel Holman during the game. The switch was not a surprise in the sense that both players have been in the mix this season, but it did add a little more clarity to how the Gamecocks are evaluating the role as the year goes on.
Special teams coordinator Matthew Smiley said Holman has shown improvement and brings a fearless approach to returning kicks, which helps explain why the staff wanted to see him in that spot. Holman has averaged 23 yards on four returns this season, while Harbor has averaged 19.3 yards on four returns, leaving South Carolina with at least one more interesting decision to sort through as the return game develops. Florida Is Suddenly Facing A Dangerous Spot Before Its Brutal Stretch
Floridas upcoming run is getting attention for all the wrong reasons, and the Week 6 pick against South Carolina only adds to the unease. The broader upset trends through Week 5 suggest underdogs have not been cashing in at the usual rate, especially in Group of 6 versus Power 4 games, but this matchup still stands out because of how the two teams have looked and what each side has coming next.
South Carolina has its own questions to sort through, but the Gamecocks are being viewed as the side better positioned to take advantage if Florida is even a little off. One wrinkle worth watching is Dylan Stewarts status, with his suspension situation still listed as TBA, leaving one more piece of the puzzle unresolved as the Gamecocks line up for a game that could say plenty about both teams. South Carolina Faces One Huge Florida Question Before Kickoff
South Carolina heads into Saturdays trip to Ben Hill Griffin Stadium still searching for traction in SEC play, and the challenge gets no easier against No. 16 Florida at 12:45 p.m. on SEC Network. The Gamecocks are 2-3 overall and 0-3 in the league, while the Gators come in at 4-1 and 3-1 in conference play, which gives this matchup a clear weight for a South Carolina team trying to steady itself before the schedule gets any harsher.
Beyond the records and the setting, the pregame picture is shaped by the usual Saturday considerations that can swing a road game: South Carolinas injury situation, the betting line that tilts toward Florida, and a weather forecast that could factor into how the afternoon unfolds. For the Gamecocks, the bigger question is how many answers they can find in a place where the margin for error tends to shrink quickly. [Read more 🡒]
