South Carolina freshman tight end Caden Ramsey has been suspended after his arrest on a racing charge, coach Shane Beamer said Monday.
Ramsey was taken into custody Sept. 7 in Moncks Corner and charged with racing on a public road, according to the Berkeley County public index. He was booked into the Berkeley County Detention Center at 4:02 a.m. Ramsey, 19, later received a personal recognizance bond, according to WCIV ABC News 4, Charleston.
Beamer didn’t soften his reaction when he addressed the situation in his weekly press conference.
"Disappointing," Beamer said. "That's not his nature, knowing the young man, we've never had a single issue with him since he's been here.
We talked about it, you absolutely can't do that. We've had plenty of conversations about driving and not driving too fast and the recklessness of that."
Beamer said he met with Ramsey on Sept. 8 and that the freshman understands the mistake. For now, the team is keeping him out.
"We'll handle it internally but for the time being he's suspended," Beamer said.
Ramsey, a 6-foot-5 freshman, played six snaps in South Carolina’s season-opening 57-0 win over Kent State on Sept. 5. After that game, Beamer said Ramsey had been named the team’s scout player of the week.
The suspension lands just as South Carolina prepares for its final non-conference game. The Gamecocks host Towson on Sept. 12 at 7 p.m.

Ramsey was a three-star signee in Beamer’s 2026 class and picked South Carolina over Georgia Tech, Syracuse and Virginia Tech. A native of Cross, South Carolina, he starred at Cross High School, where he caught 55 passes for 778 yards and nine touchdowns as a senior and added six rushing scores. Over three varsity seasons, he finished with 115 catches for 1,903 receiving yards and 24 touchdowns.
He did not enroll in January and joined the program in the summer.
Ramsey’s arrest is the third known one involving a South Carolina football player in 2026. In June, Beamer dismissed transfer running back Sam Williams-Dixon after arrests on three charges of breaking into a motor vehicle, three charges of criminal conspiracy and one charge of grand larceny.
Defensive tackle Davonte Miles was arrested Feb. 10 during a traffic stop and charged with possession with intent to distribute marijuana first offense. South Carolina announced Feb. 12 that Miles was no longer with the team.
