South Carolina Freshmen Ready to Shine in Their NCAA Tournament Debut

Freshmen Gamecocks gear up for NCAA debut, relying on veteran wisdom and youthful enthusiasm as they embark on their tournament journey.

South Carolina's basketball squad is gearing up for the NCAA Tournament, and while the team boasts seasoned veterans, it's the trio of eager freshmen who are drawing attention as they step onto the big stage for the first time.

Leading the charge is guard Agot Makeer, who has been making her presence felt with an average of 5.8 points per game. Her excitement for the tournament is palpable.

"First game tomorrow, and we're really excited to play Southern," Makeer shared. "We've put in a lot of practice this past week, and we're ready to get things rolling."

The Gamecocks are set to face Southern at home, with a victory paving their way to the Round of 32 against either Clemson or Southern Cal. Makeer is particularly looking forward to the electric atmosphere at Colonial Life Arena.

"It's about the environment," she noted. "We already have a great one here, and I'm excited to soak it all in."

Joining Makeer is 6-foot-7 forward Alicia Tournebize, who averages 4.1 points per game. Reflecting on her journey to the tournament, she expressed gratitude and excitement.

"It all happened so fast. A year ago, I couldn't have imagined being here," Tournebize said.

"I'm thrilled to get started."

Ayla McDowell, another freshman making waves with 4.5 points per game, is ready to lean on the team's veterans for guidance. "Being here is an incredible experience," McDowell remarked.

"The upperclassmen have been here before, and they're guiding us through it. It's an amazing opportunity."

Tournebize echoed this sentiment, highlighting the value of having experienced teammates like Raven Johnson. "Raven has a lot of NCAA Tournament experience and has been sharing insights with us," she said. "It's great to have that knowledge on our side."

The freshmen have already tasted the intensity of high-stakes games, having reached the SEC Tournament title game. Now, they're relying on their seasoned teammates to help them navigate the challenges of the NCAA Tournament.

"It's tough to go from the first game to the championship," McDowell explained. "Mistakes need to be minimal. You have to be mentally and physically tough, and teamwork is crucial."

Makeer added, "The upperclassmen talked a lot during the SEC Tournament about how challenging it is. We got a glimpse of that, and they've emphasized staying confident, energized, and ready to push through."

As the Gamecocks prepare for their tournament opener, the blend of youthful enthusiasm and veteran wisdom promises to be a potent mix.
