South Carolina freshman tight end Caden Ramsey was arrested in Berkeley County early Monday morning on a charge of “racing on a public road,” and a police report obtained by The State says he was clocked at 113 mph.
The report says the Moncks Corner Police Department officer saw two vehicles weaving through traffic, making several erratic lane changes and traveling at an estimated 110 mph in a zone posted at 60. After activating radar, the officer said he observed the vehicles at 113 mph in a 60 and watched one move through traffic and pass several cars “in an aggressive manner.”
According to the report, the officer then saw the vehicles “competing for speed” and trying to pass each other. At one point, the report said, they were side-by-side at 80 mph in a 50-mph zone.
When the officer turned on his emergency lights and siren, one vehicle kept going north on Highway 52 while the other stopped at the entrance to a McDonald’s, where the driver was arrested and handcuffed immediately, according to the report. Three other vehicles later came to the scene and parked in front of the McDonald’s, including the car the officer said had continued north on Highway 52. That driver was also arrested.
The report also says one of the drivers, who claimed he had just turned 21, had two pistols under the driver’s seat, including one with a “full auto conversion device.”
Gamecocks coach Shane Beamer said Tuesday morning that he met with Ramsey and that the Cross, South Carolina native is suspended from the team.
“Extremely disappointing. That’s not his nature, knowing the young man.
We’ve never had a single issue with him since he’s been here,” Beamer said. “He understands he made a mistake and we’ll handle it internally.”
Ramsey’s attorney, Seth Rose, said in a statement to The State: “Caden is a good young man and a dedicated student-athlete with a bright future. This is a pending citation, not a finding of guilt.”

Rose added that Ramsey “was not under the influence and had no firearm. We ask that people not rush to judgment while this matter is resolved.”
