The Athletic’s latest offseason project puts a price tag on Power 4 rosters, and the SEC comes out looking every bit like the sport’s biggest spender.
According to the outlet’s estimates, the conference owns three of the top five most expensive rosters in college football and 11 of the top 20 nationally. The new numbers stretch from $55 million at the top end to $8 million at the low end, with The Athletic saying the figures reflect the money each school had available to build its 2026 roster.
Texas, which entered the week as the No. 1 team in the AP poll, is also the SEC’s biggest spender in the estimates. The Longhorns land at No. 3 nationally with a projected roster budget of $45-55 million. That puts them well ahead of Arkansas, whose $22-25 million figure ranks 33rd in the country.

The Athletic said the totals come from athletic department revenue, booster donations and other school-specific sources. In its explanation, the outlet noted the challenge of pinning down these numbers because coaches and administrators often have competing incentives while the figures are being compiled.
Even with those hurdles, The Athletic said its ranges are the most detailed estimates available right now.
