South Carolina’s players didn’t dodge the Dylan Stewart conversation on Tuesday. They leaned into it.
When the Gamecocks met with the media, Tomiwa Durojaiye made it clear that the team is moving forward while also hoping its star defensive end can eventually work his way back. Stewart has been suspended indefinitely by Shane Beamer, a decision announced two days after Beamer said the situation stemmed from more than the punch Stewart threw at an Alabama tight end during the trip to Alabama.
The SEC added another layer on Monday night, handing Stewart a joint one-game suspension for what it called “egregious contact” against an opposing player. Gamecock247 also noted on Monday night in the VIP Room that it had heard a few details about the situation.
Durojaiye, who transferred from Illinois before this season, spoke before Beamer addressed reporters and said the mood around the team remains strong.
“Morale on the team is high,” Durojaiye said. “Dylan Stewart is a helluva player.
Everybody knows how talented he is. We wish Dylan the best.
Hopefully it gets figured out. Hopefully it gets resolved, but no matter what it is - the team, the team is the focus.
We definitely wish Dylan Stewart well. I love that guy and I love this team.”
He said he “absolutely” wants Stewart back on the field, but also stressed that the standard inside the program applies to everyone.
“But accountability is a core value on the team. There are some things that Dylan, he's got to get right and some things you've just got to fix (how) you express yourself.
You've got to understand how to come off on certain things. But the most important thing is the team.
“I'll be real with you guys, Dylan Stewart is a first-round draft pick, but at the end of the day, Carolina is what's No. 1.
He won't be the first first-round draft pick, and he won't be the last first-round draft pick to come through Carolina, so the team is what's important. I'm focusing on the guys that are here.
Whenever that decision gets made, I'm going to support our coaches' decision. I would love to have Dylan Stewart back.
That's not for me to decide. I've just got to do my job and play d-tackle for South Carolina.”
Hay echoed that same theme, saying the team would love to have Stewart back but cannot let anyone rise above the group.
“Obviously, you don't want to see that happen, especially with him. He's a great player.
We're going to miss him very much, but at the end of the day, you can't put yourself above the team. That's why there are rules set in place, so that people who are as good as he is set to the same standard as everyone else.
But we're with him. We wish he could be out there with us.
Yeah, we wish he was out there.”
Miller kept his message short and direct, saying the focus stays on accountability and the group as a whole.
“We're focused on the team. We're focused on holding everybody accountable and being the best we can be.”
